Everything works if you keep at it. If you deliver enough leaflets or knock on enough doors then eventually you have to get the customers you want.

Vince pretty much gor it there, you have to be persistant with it and you will here allot of no no, no, nooo no. But dont let it knock you just keep fishing and I am sure you will snag a few good custies.

If you can post up a coy of your flyer we can give you pointers on that as well. Just blank out anything you dont want us to see, mug shots, location etc.

You manner, and looks play a part.

If you dress like a scruff rough, do you really expect to gain custom? (no offence to anyone that does - but in my eyes you are a public serviceman, and therefore should wear a company uniform) I hate letting any gas engineer in without a uniform of the company, i always ask for ID and will then check it if they are not in company uniform.

Be apologetic to them when you knock on their door (sorry to disturb you.... yada yada..)

Get a CRB check done - its helps to inform of your background.

I find dropping a well presented flyer through the door and then knock on the door a few evenings later and say (with a copy of the flyer in hand) " i dropped this leaflet through the door, have you had a chance to see it? what did you think?, Would you like a free quotation whilst im here, and then maybe i can be of service to you now or in the future?

If it works, then great if not, try a few months down the line..

Think about it, what would you like to see if someone was trying to sell you something on your doorstep? Would you prefer to have seen them around a bit first?

Getting good custys is about being known.

You get good 'custys' by doing a good job (first clean and every clean) and by recommendation.

As regards Ewan's 'sales' - I know I've missed getting a few 'sales' because I didn't show enough enthusiam in front of the prospective customer (had a hard day - wasn't friendly enough, didn't smile) - major mistake!

Get your wife to knock on doors!
I did it - my husband and I offer various cleaning services. I went door knocking, found that during the week was a complete waste of time. Weekends the best.
My marketing plan seemed to work - I created a slip saying we would be cleaning windows in your area very soon, the cost for cleaning your windows would be £________. (not including conservatory) with telephone number on the bottom.
I had a look and filled in the price - I thought if I was interested in having windows cleaned I'd book it up if I knew the price. I never put any leaflets through the letterbox only slips with the cost and I'd get at least 2 new customers per 1-2 hrs walking about.

When i first tried knocking on i had a rehearsed opening line , but when they answered the door, that, for some reason went to pot and i said something like " i noticed your dirty windows ! do you need a window cleaner ? " needless to say that didn't work very well! then i tried "i can sort those windows out for £xxx price . interested ? that didn't work !. After one long unsuccessful session and feeling rather p****ed off i tried one last door "good evening sorry to disturb you but i was wondering if you required a vision technition to enhance your view of the world " F*** OFF i dont need glasses, was the reply. Some people have the knack ! some dont . As the great Homer Simpson says to his kids "IF YOU NEVER TRY YOU'LL NEVER FAIL"
dont look who's to blame, look how to fix it. anon

My mate Steve would have finished with "......and if I have time I'll give you a good sha66ing as well"

Steve was terrible, the things he used to say to customers but they loved it and quite a few took him up on the offer. We used to call him Lord Lucan because he was forever dissapearing.

Your first contact with a prospective customer involves selling you, more than selling your service.

Once they become your customer, then the task is to keep them, by selling your service - in other words, being better than others.

You are disturbing them!
I agree.
Of course you are.

One minute they're relaxing watching Antiques Roadshow, next they're getting up to try and get rid of a salesman.

I wouldn't be happy about it.

Put flyers out, that doesn't disturb people.

Leaflets...I  have delivered over 20,000 of the little beasts..and have to admit it's all about repetition...I now tend to re-leaflet  most of the area's I do every 3 to 4 months and of course I tend to leaflets the streets I clean every 8 weeks aprox.

I am afaid I cannot help you much with a leaflet as mine are all in Dutch but I am sure one of the others will cough up a leaflet for you.

I cannot help with the canvassing either as I do not do it at all...

Leaflets will work for you but and this is the thing...you'll need to put some time into wearing out some boot leather.

Cheers
Dave.
