wood stain
« on: August 18, 2008, 06:34:16 pm »
2 weeks ago I cleaned a very large 6 bed house so I got help.
The chap who helped me missed one item of furniture with foil protectors as you guessed it left dye on the carpet.
Been back today tried everything to remove the dye but still quite visable the carpet is a 100% wool loop which cost a fair wack.

I'm totally peed off never had any problems in 4 half years then this arises.
Didnt want to go down the road of insurance companys so was wondering if the same thing had happend to somone else and how you sorted it.

Hi Rob

Difficult as you know, I would try dichloromethane first (Nitromors), hydrogen peroxide  and as  last resort sodium hypochorite otherwise known as bleach.

If the bleach goes wrong you are in trouble but if it's a new carpet anyway  :'(

Cheers

Thanks Doug
I always leave my customers an after care leaflet explaining such things as wood stain and rust marks so not to be to quick at removing protectors as they can leave permanent stains. Whos the idiot now.

I have tried Nitromors didn't get the slightest bit of transfer more came off with acetone but only so much.
Never tried hydrogen peroxide or sodium hypochorite maybe the answer i'm looking for as the colour of the carpet is off white proberbly has a fancy name like antique white.
where can i buy these products?
Is this the sort of thing you keep in stock John?

Cheers Rob.

I got light brown wood dye out with red rx and a terry towel, using an iron.

Hi Guys

I've heard the Red Rx one working, definitely worth a try.

Hydrogen peroxide is avaialble from hairdressing suppliers, you can accelerate this too with a hot iron.

Sodium hypochlorite is household bleach and is really a last resort.

Can you retuft? if its only a small area this is what i would do.
if you keep on trying this, that and the other you could end up with a large area which will not be able to retuft!!!
If you cant, are there any carpet cleaners in your area who coud help.
Just another angle to tackle a situation

How big are the marks?  Size of a pound coin?  Jam jar lid?

If the size of the patches are too big to practically retuft, a partial insert may do the trick if it isn't in a traffic lane.

I was hoping you were going to say Green or some other colour. You could try recolouring using fabric pens. You will need various shades near the colour of the carpet. It will be harder to source those in whites and creams. These just wipe off with a damp cloth until they are permanently set using a hair dryer.
Even if you can set a semblence of a result maybe a cash offer would save you having to fork out for a new carpet.

John .
Where can you get these fabric pens from ?
they sound an excellent idea as a last resort , and i.m sure most custy would me more than happy with a stain hidden than an immovable eyesore?

I guess a large selection would be needed!!

Just do a search on Google, loads out there hard part is finding pastel shades rather than bright colours. Some dye sticks here:

these look good and you can mix them to get the correct shade.

Thanks for all the great ideas!
Have not been back yet to try any of these tricks out but will let you know the out come.

Some of you are quite a sneaky bunch with your fabric pens i think they could be essential last resort spotter to keep in my tool box.

Jim, if you read my reply im sure thats what i said, nothing like stating the bleeding obvious!!!
I cannot believe you would consider a patch, if a custy asked for your help to get them out the poo, then yes but not to get yourself out of it !!!When you start to cut the carpet you are damageing the carpet further.
I asked Rob if he could retuft, if he could then he would know if it was too big to get a good result.

Rob
iv never used colourd pens (well not proper ones....shuuuush) so i cant comment
Good luck

There was a carpet dying kit over on items for sale a month or so ago. I dont think it was sold.

Might be worth a look.

Dying kits are a nightmare. You have to remove the original colour before trying to match it. Very hard skill to master. With the pens you can play about and just wipe it off if its not right. You aren't going to get a perfect result but maybe somewhere near where the customer is happy.

with the dye kit you work on opposite colours so if you get a red stain on a purple carpet you add blue, on brown you add all of he colours but in different amounts. Confused?
