just a quick one...
« on: August 18, 2008, 10:14:00 pm »
hello, im a newbe and have built up a round from scratch using trad. methods.

i do not use ladders, instead i use an extention pole for upper windows. i was just reading ' a bit of advice' about cleaning sills etc. i find it impossible to clean upper sills using a pole method for obvious reasons. but i do however explain this to the customer first.

but my main reason for this post, is how do you guys using a similar method clean the upper windows? i use the straight down method, which seems best for me and looks ok too.

when im on the lower ground floor level, i always wipe the rubber first, then apply, then take off, then i go round the frames with my shamee and collect excess water/detergent etc.

is this the norm? i cannot think, of another way of doing.

p.s i dont use ladders because of a nasty accident...but am still a hard working little bugger!

I started off like this too,{ Cos I was, and still am scared of ladders} but know I have to laugh at how I got away with it for 2 or 3 months with over 150 customers before I got set up with WFP.
I dont think you can realistically get good results with a squegee on a pole no matter how you clean the rubber. Wiping the top sills would be the last of your worries I would imagine. I dont say this to have a pop at you as I did exactly the same but kidded myself that the results were good when In all honesty they weren't. IMO Go WFP if you dont want to use ladders.

i would but i just cannot afford too at the moment. my small, yet growing customer base are happy with what i do. and to be honest, the results are not too bad. i think the 'i want my windows SMEAR FREE COMPPLETELY!!!'  are gone. they're are just happy with clean dust free windows. yet i am trying to make a proper effort.

actually, thinking about it, the customers i have, have said they would prefer me NOT to use ladders. They love my little cinquecento i turn up in. they cant believe i can fit a 3metre extention pole in it!

but all jokes aside, it all comes down to pricing. if i went wfp, i would be charging alot more that what i am. and my courteous and friendliness outways my 'skills' if you like.

i guess in time and practice, i will evolve my technique.

Good luck then my friend {and fellow Chelmsfordian} I hope you can get away with it and expand.

My people skills were top rate too, and this will let some of them give you a little leeway. But you will loose some mate honestly. You cant clean windows above conservatories too well I would imagine , and as for Leadeds forget it.

I still reckon that you should shop around by a second hand system, get an RO system, get out there and get more customers and put up your prices if you think there is the scope to do so. YOU WILL MAKE YOUR MONEY BACK VERY SOON.

will be leafleting that area in the next 2 weeks. trying to get some help that is. can you believe that NO kids round here want to earn a few extra bucks during their school holidays? i used to go round farms on my 6 weeks off and beg for work! normally for about 2.50 an hour too! just about bought me 10 fAgs and 8 carlsberg back then. LOL. the world has gone mad!

There are afew tools that are on the market that might help you,

there is the backflip, which is a sqeegee / applicator,  Fixiclamp.

there are also loads of swivel squeeges, and also the MR longarm telepole, I could go on

all are relatively cheap compared to WFP.

If you check the online suppliers you can view the different products there.

All the best at what you are doing
