any ideas
« on: August 02, 2008, 05:40:38 pm »
hi all,

I have my water tank in the back of my van but with sunlight coming through the back windows the area on my tank which it hits starts to build up with algae i have cleaned it out a few times however it's quit difficult to reach inside and a couple of weeks later it starts coming back it's like its ingrained a bit inside the tank. I was thinking i could maybe fill the tank up with normal tap water and put some bleach or something that would kill it off and leave it over the weekend but am a little worried that this would then contaminate the purified water does any one have any ideas on any type of chemical or sterilising solution i could use.

many thanks
paul

Could you make a cover for it...say out of plywood or similar?

Just a thought...Cheers Dave.

yeah the tank is already covered as i have put a plywood shelf on the top and its only the end of the tank that has the problem (its a 400l flat tank). The thing is i need to try and and get rid of it properly somehow first  then after i will also cover the end of the tank, the algae slowly gets worse even if the sun is not on it.

tomy have you done that yourself and did it contaminate your water or was it ok...

can you not blank your windows out

I will do something like this after i have managed to clean the tank out properly as i need to do that first.

Milton will kill it, and its a lot easier to rinse out than bleach. Maybe a strong dose of IPA would work too?

Cover the back windows imo would be the first thing I would do.

100% true, sunlight will griw algee very quick you cant get rid of it if it is in direct light even a UV filter would find this hard as the tank side would grow it. keep out of sunlight, block off the windows, or paint tank black (windows is cheaper option and will look far better IMO.

thanks for all the replys peeps and i hear what you are saying but my question is not how to stop it as i know how to do that it is more to do with how can i get rid of what has already happened i'm going to try the milton idea as i was thinking of that myself and i'm going to blacken out the back windows after this has been done..as for the milton idea what ratio do you reckon i would need..
 thanks for all your inputs
