Newbie - advice needed
« on: May 31, 2008, 04:49:35 pm »
Hi there, what an excellent forum!

I noticed some ads in my local paper(Rotherham, near Sheffield) for people charging £12 / hour for carpet cleaning machines for a period of 24 hours. I was wondering if someone could advise me of what sort of machine to buy to provide such a service in my local area (make and price please) and whether I would need some sort of training (I have seen some one-day training courses in various other threads). I presume I would need to declare any income to Inland Revenue as well as get some liability insurance, but please advise me how much the insurance would cost. With regards to the machine, can I buy a second-hand one from ebay for the time being, and as business picks up, go for a more powerful and newer one later?

Thanks in advance to all replies.

Sure that machine hire is only about £30 for 24 hour period and few people i know who have done this, soon gave up as machines not treated well at all. Foamed up machines blow vacs regularly and not cheap to replace.
Carpet cleaning yourself would need training first and hourly earnings way in excess of £12 an hour are possible.
