TFR through the pump?
« on: May 21, 2008, 04:58:24 pm »
I've got a tricky job to do tomorrw - cleaning the sides of dormer windows. They are caked in algae and I'm sure that TFR will make my life so much easier.

What I was planning was to prepare a can of 200:1 tfr for an initial good soaking of the offending surfaces and then rinse with  tap water and finish off the glass surfaces with 000.

So ... is it OK to put a weak(ish) tfr solution through my surflo 100psi pump? or should I just dip the brush in a bucket of the stuff and give an initial scrub with that.

Wally

We did this on some really high cladding in Enfield - London, about a year ago, the pump stopped working. It could have been something to do with drawing the cleaning agent through the pump or it could have been something else?

I am no expert but if the pump has Viton seals I think they are ok to pump cleaning agents through. A lot of the carpet cleaners use pump sprayers that have Viton seals and we have a pump sprayer for applying Brick acid and aluminium cleaner - this has specific seals.

Will the membranes be damaged by the agent????. You may get away with it but will it start problems. I personally would use an older pump just in case.

what about getting a garden hand pump sprayer from homebase/ b&q ect about £20 would be cheaper than maybe killing a pump

The pumps are built to carry out chemical transfer not just pumping pure water.

Different diaphragms and check valves materials are availaible for use with different chemicals, the most common being EPDM,Santoprene, Buna or Viton, check with you supplier which type you have.
But I believe any type should be fine for diluted TFR.
