Friends and business
« on: May 09, 2008, 08:13:20 pm »
I would like your thoughts on this

A friend of mine started WFP about 8 Months ago.Well In turn he also has a friend who is a window cleaner who saw him with the reach & wash and thought that would be a good Idea..This friend of a friend has more  work then he does and went  out and brought a nice big Van with better tools than what my friend had..

The thing is this friend of a friend did not have A clue on how it all worked  :o

The next time he saw my friend he asked how it all worked  ::)

So my mate phones me and asked what he should do, You see he did not want to give him the advice, afraid that he would take some work off him as they both worked in the same area  ::)

Well I told him you have to help out, besides if not then they will give WFP a bad name and this is not good for those who know how to use it

So he told him how it all worked and..........

This ( Friend of a friend )window cleaner has taken work off him :o and has even gone to jobs he works in and asked them if they move to bigger locations give him first refusals  >:(

My friend sees Him all the time around town  but now he does not want to stop and talk or even make eye contact...

Another Wc mate of mine is gary from K & G we started WFP not long after each other we are good friends and help out all the time,We even pass work on to each other

Is this the exception of the rule or does friends and business just dont mix..

Friends and business do not mix, but friends in business can.

I found this out the hard way.

I believe the same man said "friendship and money... oil and water"....

Never a good idea to mix the two... can only turn things sour, even with the best of intentions  :(

Well i got a call this morning to do a quote on soffits and fascia clean, rung mate who runs his own window cleaning company too and asked him too help me on it, we priced it together and got job 50/50 cut(tomorrow), the bloke we quoted for then rung my mate later on as they had a mutual friend and had exchanged numbers,  and said will you quote for his mother, as my mate was only round the corner from this blokes mother he went and priced it, got job, my mate rung me straight away and said we had got the blokes mums house too which we can do after the blokes house, he didnt even have to tell me he could of just gone there after 1st job without me knowing, but one thing is i wouldnt go into a partnership with anyone as this is the one reason im going self employed is to work as my own boss. But im a strong believer of what goes around comes around so your friends friend will one day come to trouble.

This is a post I posted tonight on another w/c forum.

Today I sent my daughter off on a few Jobs, included in these Jobs was one to call around to her younger sister and do her windows for her.

Now ever since I have been a w/c I have done all 3 of my daughters windows free of charge, my eldest girl got back tonight and told me she had charged her sister for her windows,  I told her off and said you know I have never charged any of you 3 for your windows, so why did you charge her???

She replied You always taught us Dad ''We have no friends in Business'' so why is Julie any exception to your rule? if I'm taking over, then I will take your advice and I won't have any friends in business?

How could I argue? I told her as long as its my business you will not charge your sisters.
How much did you charge her? did you give her a discount for being your sister I said?....No way I charged her your minimum rate.

I drove up my daughters tonight and gave her, her money back, she told me, I don't mind paying Dad but I will expect for my windows to be done on time and in line with all your paying customers.
I told her the same story, as long as its still my business, bla bla bla.

My eldest girl also came back with a very big Job to price and a conservatory roof to do?

I'm very pleased with her progress (for a girl Lol) I also think the right one is taking over from me.

For one you are a start to get your girls to do window cleaning in the first place, and the one you are talking about kill be a killer in business and do very well.

I am well impressed, I have three boys all are being trained just have 3 more years to go
