Prices
« on: May 08, 2008, 05:27:54 pm »
The sister of 1 of my customers has asked me to go to her village as they can't get a window cleaner to go there.I told her once I am fully used to the wfp and if I have a spare day I will go. She says there are aprox 17-20 houses. The village is about 8 miles from my nearest cleaning area, I usually charge £1 per window, should I stick at this price or charge a bit more for travelling?Haven't seen any of the work yet
Cheers Rich

See how many you pick up, I got a call to do 1 house  in a small hamlet around 15 houses there, I told the guy on the phone it would cost more because I had to travel, what if I get you some more customers he said, I replied the more you get me the more I'll knock off until it reaches normal pricing.

By the time I left this little hamlet I had 12 of them and still do them today, its a good little earner.

Ask them to see if they can get you more customers so you can keep your price to near normal prices.
Do it on a Saturday when more people are home and do a leaflet drop in the village.
Good Luck.

no I wouldn't charge any extra.  8miles?  so thats 10mins in the van and about £2 in fuel to go there and back.

RPWC,

I would say that to do any of them you'll need a minimum of 10 houses and arrange to go on a Saturday after she has got you names and house numbers to visit, its amazing how effective a neighbour can be at canvassing work, ive picked up entire closes using this method.

Just stick an extra £1 or £2 on each house if there that desperate for a WCer they wont bat an eyelid

well if its a nuisance to get to then I suppose you need to charge a little more but I'd be tempted to keep prices the same.

£1.00 per window works for me (that's £1.00 per window, regardless of size; it generally averages out nicely; (much more for 3+ storey work), but if there's any issues such as the customer looks wealthy, add a bit more on for 'Matt's rich tax', or extra for any access issues, and also don't forget to add some more if the customer came to you by reccommendation (taking into account how much you charge the person who reccommended you).

But you've got to use some common sense when using the above formula.

And as a rule, when someone says 'we can't get a window cleaner round here', there's normally quite a few of them.

Anyway, I quoted for and cleaned a lovely farm house this morning; I counted 31 windows; no access issues, pvc frames; a perfect job, so I didn't add 'Matt's Rich Tax', or any thing else on.  It's in a place where we clean a £50 house, and four others all priced above £15.00.

The lady asked how much and I said £31, then thought about it and said, 'let's call it £30.  It took two of us 30 minutes to clean it; on a first clean; so we should knock 10 minutes off that at least!

That's good by my standards; she seems like a top customer too.

Pricing is more of an art than a science.  I also do a lot of terraced houses, all compact work, and charge them between £7 and £9 each and it works out well for us.
