window cleaner cheats death in spiked railings fall
« on: April 26, 2008, 04:07:17 pm »
This is a story printed in my local paper last week, I think someone should inform the hotel manager about WFP.

A WINDOW cleaner cheated death when he fell 10ft from his ladder and brushed spiked railings at a Cambridge hotel.

The 42-year-old suffered a flesh wound to his leg but an ambulance worker said: "If he had fallen at a different angle it could have been a lot more serious."

The man was working as a sub-contractor cleaning windows at the De Vere University Arms Hotel in Regent Street when he appears to have slipped from his ladder.

Hotel staff gave him first aid and called an ambulance.

A spokesman for the East of England Ambulance Trust said: "A rapid response unit was sent to the hotel.

"A second ambulance then took the man to Addenbrooke's Hospital.

"He was awake and alert but complaining of numbness in his legs."

A spokesman for the hotel said: "We are investigating what happened and will be working closely with environmental health.

"We have all the necessary risk assessments in place, and are satisfied it was a genuine accident."

The window cleaner has been released from hospital.

Cambridge City Council Environmental Services, which works with businesses to improve health and safety, said they were looking into the accident.

A spokesman said: "The hotel will carry out their own investigation into the incident but we will also be sending a representative down there as soon as possible to investigate what has happened.

"We will then put in place any changes which we feel need to be made to prevent this happening again.

"We will also be speaking to the person who was injured and the company he works for to ensure they also had the correct safety procedures, such as non-slip shoes, in place."

I best send them our details then  ;), the guy was very lucky but will they learn from it I doubt it.
last one in cambs I did they was not interested in the safety of the cleaner just the money it was costing, I turned one down for this reason. My safety is worth more than a hotel college or uni in cambridge HSE should come down on them so it stops this problem

I picked up one hotel due to the fact of a safety issue, and a recommend from one of my customers that worked there helped! I dont think its always down to the company or the health and safety guy at the uni's, hotels ect,  its the individual that is doing the work. We all at some point have cut corners, and i have myself have had a few falls.

I have quoted commercial properties with the relevant people who deal with the safety of tradesmen working on site and in all honesty they still choose traditional window cleaners over WFP simply because of prices submitted even though they are fully aware of the potential hazards ladders can cause.

I encourage the likes of Tennet to raise awareness of the WAHR because as a WFP user I have invested in working safely and would like to see commercial customers being held more responsible for the health & safety of tradesmen on their premises.

Here here.  So it isnt just me that can see the benefit of reporting em.

I wasnt being selfish at all I had their safety in mind, not their nice juicy contracts.  And of course my civic duty.  **KERCHING**

No in all seriousness, this is just what I mean.  Why should we who have spent the money and are obeying the law lose contracts to those who arent?  That aint fair.

surely if we use wfp we should be cheaper than traditional when it comes to commercial work as it is much faster, so if the job is on price wfp should win hands down.
better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove any doubt
