Canvessing
« on: April 03, 2008, 08:42:58 pm »
Just started canvessing, going door to door. Tonight did about 20 really large houses, most not interested but quoted about 4, however didn't get one booking. As I'm new to this is this normal? Is it likely some will phone at a later date? I believe I am better knocking face to face, Ive figured the best time 6pm onwards and Ive allowed 6months - 1 year to build a round. Been going now two weeks and gained 16 clients all repeat and all really good prices. Is this a low amount to have gained or normal? bearing in mind I'm only canvessing about 20 a day. Please let me hear your views.

Whenever ive tried canvassing (a long long time ago!) i averaged one new customer per hour canvassing. Now i just advertise in local freebie.  8) Syd

Hi,
I haven't canvassed now for at least 10 years. When I did canvass I picked up £1600 of work in about 6 weeks, around 200 houses, I guess I was very lucky as there was not many window cleaners about then.

Good luck.

All depends on the value of the work rather than just the numbers. My advice knock more doors, 20 is no way near enough, aim for 100. Different people are at home at different times. OAP's are at home all day.

If they dont book you there and then 99% of the time youve missed them. You have done very well for the number you have knocked.

Good luck

I used to know a great canvasser who gave me some great advice. The whole thing is a numbers game. He had a number of canvassers working for him and he expected each one to bring in 40 new customers per month. He would personally aim for 100 per month. I know that his best month ever he put on 300 but as a general rule he would do at least 60. He would canvass throughout the week between 5pm-8pm. He also would canvass saturday daytime but sunday was usually his best day. He would pick an area and visit every house. 20 is a low number to expect a return from. personally I think you should look to be knocking on about 100 per night minimum. Of these 100, 10 might want a quote and if half take you up then 5 new customers. Be prepared for rejection as that is the biggest thing that is going to put you off. We have all gone out canvassing before and got nothing the one night and the next night it seems that everyone wants a window cleaner. The secret is to remember the good night when having a bad one. Yes blanket canvassing can be a bit hit and miss but it does work. If it didn't there wouldn't be all these canvassing companies offering to do it for you. Remember like I said it's a numbers game and the more you knock the more customers you'll get. If you can get over the rejection thing and keep knocking you'll be onto a winner!

Thanks for all your tips. Its taking me about 1 and half hours to canvess 20 or so houses. I think I'm spending far to long and also people are really curious about the system, so once they start asking questions I find it difficult to get away. I tried on Saturday and found hardly anyone at home, Sunday is a no no here, as some people would take offence (Ireland), so that just leaves me Mon- Fri 6pm onwards. 10 new customers per week is what I'm aiming for, so I think Ive got to speed up my sales pitch & move a lot quicker   :) :) :)  It'll be interesting to see where I am in 3 months?

well youve been going 2 weeks a
nd knocking 20 houses per day

10 days x20 = 200 targets
16 custies =8%
plus the calls youl get in the future... ;)

it's all about  percentages and numbers... the more you knock ....the more youl get :D

Cheers  :), but although Ive been going two weeks I didnt canvess at first, I used the time to practice my WFP on my own house and family and then took two clients from word of mouth. Ive only actually canvessed about 40 - 45 houses in total. So if I look at it that way its a higher %, which might justify the hard sell I'm giving them? (now got 18) But I'll still try to get a move on...cause its boring when you havent got many, I long to be busy like you guys! Plus when youve actually built your round, I imagine its less stress (cuse you know you've done it) and if you loose one or two you only have to replace one or two. Still I live in hope, some day  ;D

One thing I always do is have a bunch of flyers or business cards,.. if no one is home, drop one through the door, and make a note of it. Call back a day or 2 later, while its fresh in their mind.

And also, things like a flyer or a bunch of cards on the supermarket notice boards, doctors & Dentists waiting rooms etc will bring in a few jobs. Not always in your preferred area,.. but any work is better than none.

Have you got sign writing on your vehicle yet? Also very effective advertising, pays for itself quicker than you'd imagine!

Its all just the numbers game really. You just keep knocking and eventually you get the customers. It really is that simple.

Nathaniel is right about keeping records of where you've been, who was out etc but try not to stand and chat.

Over time you will get more confident and polish your style but you just have to keep at it.
