Bleach safe carpets
« on: March 22, 2008, 02:55:29 pm »
Has anyone had any dealings with these type of carpets.

The reason I ask is our next door neighbour had a cream one fitted two weeks ago, then the cat knocked over her vase of lillies on Wednesday all over it.   :o

Foolishly she tried cleaning it with her Bissell machine, which only made it worse, then she asked me to have a look at it, however by the time I got to it there was an area covering about 1m2 which was badly stained with pollen and I couldn't do anything with it, I thought it was permanent and she should contact her insurers.

However the carpet fitter came and cleaned it .......... with neat bleach!  You can't see a mark of staining and the carpet looks perfect.

I'd heard of these carpets before but never dealt with any, I was well impressed with the result.

Ian they are Polyprop, most of the good ones are stain resistant to almost everything.

Did a job a few years back and couldn't move a crayon mark with anything I had. Customer went and got some bleach and rubbed it off herself, couldn't believe it.
Most poly's are sold as bleach resistant, but I still wouldn't like to try it.

Always take on board the difference between a fibre that is bleach resistant and a carpet that is bleach resistant.

And typically, bleach will not remove a stain, it will merely make it invisible to the naked eye under white light. How often have you been to a club or disco and seen garments with big stains under UV/black light only for them to disappear under white light?

Safe and happy cleaning :)

You wil find lilly pollen can be removed more successfully with solvent spotter ,pog ,alchohol etc as usually waterbased products wont touch it.

Ken, cant make out the difference from your first line above. "Carpet or fibre", surely the same thing?

Hi Guys

I have been experimenting with bleach on carpet samples and have found the Zylon PP to be bleach resistant.

However I would want to test other PP carpets before feeling confident that all PP is bleach resistant, one of those areas where one has to proceed with caution.

PP is an easy fibre to test for as it is is the only one with a specific gravity less than 1 so lighter than water and will float, inportant you add a bit of surfactant to the water though as otherwise surface tension could distort your test result.

Cheers

Doug

There are a number of different manufacturers now procesing bleach resistant carpets.
Again you need to know what your dealing with and advise accordingly regarding direct or indirect application.
Below is a good extract from Weston Carpets.

New generation of healthcare carpets from Weston

Weston Carpets’ Premiere-Care range is specifically targeted to the healthcare market and is the first fully impervious carpet to be produced using Colortec, the very latest generation of carpet manufacturing technology which can create larger, bolder designs. Most other solution-dyed carpets in this market have small geometric or tonal designs due to manufacturing limitations.

“Weston is one of only a very few carpet companies currently able to offer the larger Axminster-style designs on healthcare carpet,” said Weston Carpets contract sales manager Neil Barker. This welcome flexibility in carpet design is thanks to the advanced technology used in the production of this carpet in Denmark so the design possibilities for this range are endless.”

Weston Premiere-Care is 100% polypropylene and is currently available in two designs, Rosetta and Floral, and in three colours. A third design, Trellis, is currently being developed and others are in the pipeline. The carpet features a lightweight, impervious felt backing which makes the carpet soft and comfortable underfoot and at the same time manageable and easy to handle. The backing is guaranteed for the life of the carpet.

Weston Premiere-Care is solution-dyed, which means the colour is fixed all the way through the yarn. It will not fade and it cannot be affected by bleach – the carpet is virtually stain-proof. It is a heavy duty cut-pile contract carpet designed primarily for public areas in the healthcare environment such as lounges, dining rooms, receptions, day centres, corridors and eating areas.

Two other carpets in Weston’s healthcare range are Weston Solutions and the best-selling Weston Décor-Care. Both have a five-year wear guarantee, and anti-stain and anti-fade warranties. They are anti-static and fully impervious up to NHS spec.

Both Weston Solutions and Weston Décor-Care are available in any width up to 4m. Weston Carpets is the only carpet company in the healthcare sector to offer the any-width option on most of its carpets, offering economy for the client through reduced waste and making installation easier.

These bleach-resistant, heavy duty carpets are available in a range of plain colourways for interior design flexibility. Again, solution dying means that the colour is fast throughout the pile. Both feature a fully impervious, flame retardant latex backing with BACO FRF accreditation.

No Paul

Cleaning a PP fibre with a bleach need not be the same as cleaning a carpet with bleach.

From my perspective, it's better to regard the householder as an idiot. They may not damage a "safe to clean" PP fibre with the bleach, but they can sure as hell damage the carpet.

SAFE and happy cleaning :)

Ken I think we are talking about 2 different things on this one mate  :)

Ian in his post asked for knowledge on bleach resistant carpets.
I replied about bleach resistant carpets, but never advocated using bleach, which I would not use myself let alone advise a customer.

I just could not work out your comment about a fibre that is bleach resistant or a carpet that is bleach resistant, I wanted to know the difference.

Hi Paul

I can see where you're coming from now.

As far as I'm aware, I have never seen advertised a bleach resistant carpet, only bleach resistant fibre. Hence my attempt to differentiate between the two.

Heres a quote from the Abingdon website as an example:

Family friendly carpet that is made from 100% bleach cleanable Zylon Polypropylene. Guaranteed against ALL HOUSEHOLD STAINS!

Safe and happy cleaning :)

Ken thats why I put the marketing goop from Weston carpets on. If you read the bottom of it

These bleach-resistant, heavy duty carpets are available in a range of plain colourways for interior design flexibility. Again, solution dying means that the colour is fast throughout the pile. Both feature a fully impervious, flame retardant latex backing with BACO FRF accreditation.

It makes you believe it is bullet proof, and although the fibres may be pretty resilient to bleach etc I wonder about the backing and bonding qualities, as you can see they state that it is impervious  :o

Hi Guys

My girlfriend bought her daughter a new Zylon PP carpet for her bedroom and the little darling melted it with her hairdryer after 3 days so not exactly bullet proof ::)

Cheers
