Parquet flooring
« on: February 19, 2008, 10:57:23 am »
Hi

I have been asked to restore a parquet floor in a residential property.
The lady says that the last people who came said that she needed to be careful because the blocks might go black... what did they mean?

Any insight would be great.

Thanks

Andy

Andy,

According to a article I read online (uktv style homes) on treating parquet flooring, it basically said that; - if after sanding the blocks and vacuuming - you then use a oil or wax to revitalize floor - there is a danger that the oil will penetrate into some of the blocks and melt some of bitumen used to originally stick the blocks in place - this will then come to the suface and turn the edges of the parquet blocks black in colour.

Have you ever done this type of restoration before?

Hi Keith

Thanks for that.  Makes perfect sense.

Not done parquet flooring before and don't know if the floor has been waxed/oiled or varnished/sealed.  Will have a better idea when I have done the survey (tomorrow).

Thanks for the advice.

Andy,

Ive have also not restored parquet flooring myself - and to be honest I would rather leave it to someone who knows what they are doing!

Out of curiosity and as a request, If you go ahead and do the job - would you take some `before` and `after` pictures, and post them on this forum?

I always use bourneseal for par quay floors you can get a quick drying one and the normal one, use the normal one if drying time is not an issue as it is easier to apply.

If your sanding it, be careful cos it`s easy to mess up and make sure your insurance covers you if anything does go wrong.

Most of the time you can use a black pad and a rotary to just take the top layer of polish off before re-applying, but it depends how bad it is.

Thanks for the tips.
If I feel it is beyond me, I will certainly not take it on.   Apart from anything else, I would not want to mess up someone's floor.

Let you know how I get on

hi andy,

there is no reason for the wood to turn black,  if you sand it to bear wood, then fill the gaps if any, you will not get that "butamen through"  ???,   please  please please do not use bourne seal,  quick drying or not, the fumes will go through the house and it will be there for weeks,

i have done over a hundred parquets, had no trouble,   sand the floor with the grain cornere to corner then back again,  gradualy go through the grains, 36, 40, 60, 80,120. then scotch mesh with 60 grit disc using a rotary machine, hoover everywhere, then aply the varnish or oil,   the best on the market with low odour is bona, you can apply three coats of varnish in a day, oil you can do with a rotary machine in 2 - 3 hours,

hope this helps  ;D

tahnx jonny

Hi Jonny

Thanks for the reply.

I sent you an email about this job the other day and if the customer is prepared to pay for the resanding then the job is yours matey.

I would only even consider doing it if it is a 'strip and seal' job, and even then, as I haven't done a parquet before I will probably push the sanding method.

Will let you know.

Cheers again

Andy

Yes, she had someone come to do a quote but they scared her off by saying the blocks could go black.  It has taken a lot of persuasion for me to be able to go in and even do a quote.

Castle Floorcare,

What product do you use to fill the gaps in the parquet flooring? and how do you apply it?

hi keith,

we only use the best products, we use lecol parquet floor filler,  you need a bucket,   filler,   and fine dust from the edger,

you mix it together in the bucket until you get a paste like substance,  then you aply it to the floor using a trowel,  then let it dry, whats good with lecol it goes off in about half an hour,

then sand the floor and edge the floor using grade 120,

then scotch mesh,  hoover and varnish,

hey presto

hi please, please please not granseal for domestic, the fumes on that is worse than bourneseal,

you would kill the people,  granwax does make a low odour varnish called classic,

thanx jonny
