I was cleaning some soot damage in a customers home a few weeks ago, and the customer was concerned about having the carpet cleaned, as her Carpet Retailer had told her not to have her Carpets Cleaned hovering was enough.

Have you  ever been told this by a customer. Or heard it from the Carpet Retailers/

Several clients have reported similar advice from retailers.

Most had already realised that the retailer did not want the carpet to last as long as it could

We have found this very widespread in the sale of leather furniture.  Retailers advise their customers that their new suite needs nothing doing to it.  Generally we have found that this is to cover themselves so that if the customer then does something they are then not held responsible for any damage.

Many of my clients with leather furniture have been advised to "wipe over with a soapy cloth every day". Others have had similar advice but told to use washing up liquid

A wipe over with a damp cloth once a week is very good advice, but only with a cleaning product specifically designed for leather (see below).  This will help restore the moisture balance in the leather.  Leather dries out in our centrally heated homes and with ultra violet rays and so to restore the moisture balance is important.  This is why we advocate using water based cleaners and protectors because as well as doing the job of cleaning or protecting  they are also replacing water back into the leather.

The problem these days with using washing up liquid or other household soaps that have not specifically been developed for use on leather is that they are adding more chemicals and salts to them to make them more efficient for the job they are doing which is cleaning dishes, clothes etc. but not for cleaning leather.  These chemicals can have a detrimental effect on some of the many finishes that are on the furniture these days.

I am afraid some do Ian, badly informed and trained shop assistants who do not read the manufacturers own guide lines on carpet maintenance which recommend regular vacuuming and professional cleaning.

Last week I posted that some retailers are now advising their customers not to vacuum their sofas for fear of losing filler from the cushions. :

The other week I had a cancellation because the cust had a new carpet fitted elsewhere in the house and the fitter told her that under no circumstances to have any carpets cleaned as it ' ruined them'  She would not tell me who it was and would not listen when I told her that there was an NCCA. You camn't win them all but I would like to know who is spreading this nonsense. Make my blood boil, not through the loss of work but the ignorance of it!

Hi Guys,

Most salesmen in carpet shops know 'sweet fanny adams' about carpet cleaning , but being salesmen  , are not slow to voice an 'expert' opinon.

It has always been and always will -  don't let it stress you

        The use of a comma is needed after 'Malta' and also after 'is'.
'Un-wrap' is really all one word (Unwrap).
There is an 'In' missing after 'them'.
There is an 'Is' missing after 'nephew'
Comma after the word 'fitter'
Your dose is really spelt does.

Hi,
My local retailer was of that opinion . Over a period of time ,giving advice ,helping them out removing marks from newly fitted carpets &cleaning carpets in their homes this changed !
We now have a really good working relationship.They recommend me all the time & I do the protection on carpets & upholstery.
Keep working on them , it pays in the end !
