Tax bill warning
« on: January 14, 2008, 10:10:06 am »
I usually pay my tax twice a year, January 31st and July 31st. Suddenly realised the bill for payment due this month hasn't arrived. This does not surprise me because our post is terrible, we have had a number of letters go astray recently and we are pretty sure we didn't get all the Christmas cards that were sent to us.

So this morning ( stuck indoors because of the rain ) I phoned the tax office who told me there had been a problem and thousands of tax demands were never sent out. And whats more they don't intend to send out duplicates.
Also, although its their fault if you don't pay on time you still get fined.

So if you were expecting a tax demand and it hasn't arrived you had better chase them up now.

The problems with Royal Mail seem to be Nationwide and do not seem to be getting any better, We are hit with "missing" post as are many others throughout the country. Last year a customer who pays within 5 days every time had to be "chased" in February. She sent another chq sent which we received. In May we received the orginal chq!!!! It was date stamped Feb 22!!! Took it to the local office and they were not interested, spoke to their complaints and got a standard letter syaing they would do better and a book of 6 first class as compensation!!! They have not done better and at prsent we have over 20 decemebr custies that say they have sent payment which we have not received. They are all sending new ones!  The irony here is that one of them is a postie!!!! and he is not surprised.

As for tax payments we all know when they are due, so as Vince did we should be making efforts to find out what is going on, although I agree with Vince here that the IR are out of order on this one :)

The taxman only has to notiify you once a year bout your tax liability and does not have to issue reminders for January, the onus is on YOU to remember.

I phoned them and said I needed a statement, but not a paying in slip as I pay by direct transfer over the phone.

Statement arrived next day.  I phoned my online banking service who transferred the amount from my saver account to my business current account, and then to the IR.  All done instantaneously.

Cheers,

Ian

anyone apart for the new business' knows that tax has to be paid in jan.
they are a law to themselves. pulling it did not turn up does not work with them, I have the same standing with my customers, it is there resonsibility to make sure payment is made on time or they get charged for it, just they same as I do if I make payment late.

PAY TAX ONTIME, or make an arrangement with them before it is due  ;)
I have to pay mine next week maybe week after and I hate it, hurts like hell but it has to be done so we can pay for illegals to get there new houses and dole money  >:(

talking of tax returns, my accountant has just dropped mine of for me with a bill for £150. Just wondered what the going rate was? Last year i paid the same but i had quite a few meetings and he saved me alot of money. But all he has done this year is fill in my return.

thanks, looks like hes pretty cheap then. He saved me £3000 in his first year because i had been filling my own return in and i hadnt been claiming for a car loan i have. So he claimed for two years of the loan and he put me in credit with the inland revenue. Doubt whether this will happen to me again!
