This job can't be done without george.(realisticly) That's just fact. Being able to do internet banking with your custies paying straight in is another advantage.
If you just want to earn a living you don't need it. If you want to move forward you do. It's not about keeping up with the jones. When you've got it you'll see for yourself.
I've managed without George for 22 years (not that it was around at the beginning)! We look after large domestic rounds, some of them sub-contracted out and large commercial rounds. Whilst I'm sure it's a very useful bit of software, you really do not need it to run a successful business plus I just can't be bothered and my wife says I'm tight.
This does surprise me. I got put in my place once before over this by trevor knight who has a bigger business and better software that works out the actual route and best way to do the round and lots of financial stuff that george doesn't do.
The fact is though Alex that you, and most probably your dad spent many hours figuring out the best way to retain and work with the information you need to do your job. I know that Shiner has a very good spreadsheet template set up too, but how many man hours did this take to evolve. George costs £50.
To print off tomorrows work, one click. Who owes you money? one click. New customer, just type it in. Any frequency. How much did you earn last month?this financial year todate?
Are far as cost benefit ratio's go it beats anything.
It only takes a couple of mouse clicks for me to view various reports too.
It's swings and roundabouts I think Mr Solubility.
Bear in mind I wasn't aware of George and similar software when I first set up my templates too.
I acknowledge that I did need to spend a while developing my templates to the way I wanted them and there was a certain amount of head scratching and I also needed to ask a few questions on usenet. However, the flip side of that is that I only had to develop the features that I wanted. If someone wants an extra feature, they must wait until the author of George updates the software (and I understand he is pretty good at adding things). However, if I need an extra field on my database with a formula in it or if I need to manipulate the software to produce a different type of report, I can just spend a few minutes at most making my tweaks.
So pros and cons really.
I spent longer setting it up but it does reflect my needs more specifically.
I can make my own adjustments when I choose to make them but I have to put a little bit of effort in.
Mine doesn't have a friendly looking front end but that doesn't matter if you've set it up yourself. However, this could initially make it a bit harder for others to use.
George does look more user friendly but you might have to wait for an update if it doesn't meet a specific need.
A lot depends on how an individual wants to do things I think.
The right solution for one person might not be right for someone else.
Also, I did get a small sense of achievement from setting things up myself.
