finally got my Vikan down to 270 g
« on: December 05, 2007, 11:15:19 pm »
now i know this will not interest al of you, infact most of you had better stop reading now

 :)

no need to look it you like " off the shelf kit "

:)

now that should do away with the " it looks rubbish" & " i dont like it " & " my brush from XXXXXX supplier looks better "

Ive been suffering from a sore neck since last Christmas, my thought on it were :

1. Humping those 25 L barrels filled to the brim ( thus 30 L ) into my car boot, the style of the car was it was a estate with a raised tailgate, ive altered this in 2 ways now, dont fill the 25 L past 20 ish L's and ive now got a van ( still use barrels though ( hey i like the unprofessional look of it  ::) ::)

2. my Unger ali pole and Vikan brush

Im now using a lightweight fishing pole, its working well, only downside was my brush the "vikan" was too heavy for it, so ive used a "bently brush" for 2 months, it was very light and worked well enough, the only thing i noticed was the bristles would foul the fan jets, i would then use more water rinseing down the glass

the combination of the lightweight pole / brush and the less water in the van has stoped my sore neck

but i missed the Vikan, its a good brush

so i set about making a Vikan lighter ( after jikwan mentioned it on here )

brush weights @ start

Bently 230 g
Vikan 430 g

i cut and took the Vikan down to 340 g, great i thought, its a fair bit lighter, i worked Monday and tuesday with it, i used less water and thought it was great :)

i got home with a niggling neck pain, today ( wednesday ) its fairly painfull again, the only thing i have changed is the brush weight, 110 gramms more, its not a lot  ??? ???

so today i set about making the other Vikan even lighter ( i have 2 brushs here )

ive now got it down to 270 g , which is right down as low as i can get it, its only 40 g more than the bently and still has its shape

im happier and hope it will sort out my neck pain

nice one matt.
I've been doing this for a while now with my rectangular vikans, it does make a big difference in weight & usability of the brush. lot easier to get into top corners of bottom sashes too. I use an angle grinder (though it does melt the plastic, so have to keep stopping to let it solidify & then break it off) then shave it smooth with the edge of a new stanley blade. ;)

Great innovation Matt, how about a picture?
This is of great interest.
Also of interest-to me- And for similar reasons, is there any way you can motorise a reel to wind back in?
Has this already been done?
Thanking you in advance.

can increase 360 deg splay by cutting out 2 rows of central bristles
works a treat
big difference  use a nail sisor

ive lost 2 rows with the trim down, so that might be too much, i might try and lose 1 middle row ( the opposite site to the 2 ive lost

Put a picture up Matt and i'll get an engineer to have a look with a view to machining them properly. I've got about six vikans, but I wouldn't want to lose any bristles.

Regarding the electric rewinding hose, I obviously mean't to rewind our reels not a toy, but thanks for looking. I'm surpised no one has approached this before.

A hose reel device  that rewound with in built safety features so you didn't end up with the pole slapping you in the head at 60mph would have to make mine and many others working days much easier. If anyone knows how it could be done, or if it already has where you could purchase one, then i'm all ears.
