Had an accident today
« on: November 21, 2007, 10:37:32 pm »
Well what a day

stopped using ladders 2 years now and still had an accident gaining access to the back of a property using my wfp.

I was climbing over the gate to unlock it next thing i knew i had fallen back and smashed the back of my head into a wall one of the panels was loose on the fence.  I was semi concious and all my body was numb after a couple of minutes i got to call an ambulance at the hospital they said it was the top end of a minor head injury and i have also re-injured my knee.

My head is throbbing and the size of a watermelon

Ive got to get these access problems sorted out ive phoned people up before to leave gates etc open but they dont leave them unlocked, im thinking of charging them full price when i have informed them but they still leave things locked up.

So be safe when you are climbing over fences to gain access

regards

Brett

ouch,

i had a really poo day today.

everyone watch out - garden paths/ patios / decking   watch your steps - ive nearly slipped onto my back about 20 times just carrying my pole to the back, its all slippery and bad everywhere- not very nice especially slipping over infront of customers. doesnt matter if your water fed pole - you can still have accidents, just as easy.

Prevention is better than cure. Wear some sensible shoes or boots, i.e. oil resistant soles, anti slip type even for WFP as decking, etc can be slippery to walk on especially carrying an extended WF pole.
If customers can't be bother to unlock gates, remove padlocks, etc, especially if they know you are calling then just clean what's accessible and charge them a higher percentage in proportion to what you've actually cleaned and call it the set up / inconvenience price and inform your customer that's what they'll be charged everytime access is denied for a pre-arranged visit. It's not worth the hassle of trying to climb over gates, walls, etc as an accident is waiting to happen.
Brett, I hope you are feeling better now. I feel for you sincerely.

If you prearrange a visit and gate is locked charge them full price, not a % this is there own fault not yours

The easier thing to do would be dump it,if i have to make a call to arrange a clean it`s a large job, can`t be doing with sodding around with calling custies to unlock there gate.

Sorry to hear about you fall.  The paths are a bit like ice rinks at the moment.  Look on the bright side though.  At least you weren't at the top of an 18ft ladder and fell, you may not have been able to make the post if that was the case.

Sorry to hear about your accident Brett.
I have believed for a long time that using ladders for access is more dangerous than using them for cleaning windows.
Gates are often placed where the wall of the house ends, thus when you use your ladder to make a style one half of it often has to go to a corner.
The other dodgy practice, and I still do it, is using ladders to access balcony's.
It's not too bad when the have railings round them, but some have glass with varnished wooden surrounds. Getting onto them isn't to bad, it's when you come to get off. For this reason, I use my old favourite the milk crate. I take it up with me just so that I can stand on it when getting back off. Ladders slip round all over the place on those varnished tops, and it's really difficult sometimes to get your foot onto the centre of a rung.
I once had the embarrassing experience of having to rescued by a next door customer. I had got onto this balcony and there was sod all to stand on when trying to get off. I find it a bit more difficult getting my leg over these days[ no smutty comments]. This kind lady actually came far enough up my ladder to hand me a plastic patio chair.
Hope your better soon mate, it just goes to show, you don't have to fall very far to really hurt yourself. Dai
