Why do windows get dirtier at the top of the pane?
« on: November 20, 2007, 05:42:08 pm »
Maybe a daft questions...just wondered why the tops of the panes are dirtier than the bottoms.  Afterall, water runs down the windows, not up, so logically I would have thought dirt would collect more at the bottom ???
taking panes to exceed expectations

I imagine its proberly were rain water doesnt reach! so it hits more down the window and helps clean it slightly. As rain water is pure

Thats what id say but could be wrong

If WFP try cleaning the top frame, you`ll find this problem no more. It`s only by doing the top frame especially that the windows stay cleaner longer as theres no dirt on the top frame to run down and cling to the glass.

Its the wind putting the dirt on the windows and the rain washes the dirt off, but the rain doesnt hit the top of the pain , hence why it gets dirtier at the top, nothing to do with the frame or wfp

That's not true either. There's a range of reasons why dirt get's onto the glass including electrostatic charge, small particles being attracted to a larger mass, and the adhesion stickyness of soap residue. Assuming rain hit's uniformly which it most certainly does (wrong again Dave) then there would be a greater natural flow of water towards the bottom.
Dirt collects on any ledge. The ledge at the bottom, the sill, can't dirty the window though.
I've heard it all now, rain avoiding certain parts of a window ;D

Water dosen`t hit the top of the frame, what type of house do you live in then.Have you looked out of the window in a downpour of rain,if rain dosen`t hit the top of the window you must live in a house with facia and soffits about 3 feet wide. ::) ::) ::) ::)

With rain and wind a vortex occurs as it passes the window.
Therefore whilst the rain (pure water) misses the top of the frame dirt in the air catches onto the top of the frame.
easy really

I agree with Dave, but I'll still be accused of arguing. ;D

Daves right,
it's only logical. The top of the frames are sheltered because the windows are recessed. Con roofs are not, hence an even distribution of dirt on them.
Can't believe I even bothered to reply to this one. DAI

It's an easy mistake for a newby to make dia, but of course down stairs windows do have an even spread of rain, and they are still dirtier at the top.

An ledge collects dirt. The top ledge can infect the window, the bottom can't.

Its the top reveal what protects the top of the window, not the eaves.

Imagine standing in the rain with a baseball cap on, now say you got splashed from head to toe with mud.
when it rains your face will remain dry while everywhere ellse from your chest down will get wet, now if you have a dirty face it will stay dirty, however if you had muddy waterproof jacket , given enough time it would probably get cleaned by the effects of the rain.
