given my vikan a lot of stick and the bristles are surprisingly in
good condition   exept the ends

its really heavy

i got drills hacksaws and even a butchers chopper

how far can i go without ruining it?

thinking to take 1/4" off the cicumference
                          1/4" off the top
drilling the hell out of the female thread base
and a load of drilling along the centre of brush

if i take a quater off the top-will the bristles fall out?

You can trim the edges virtually up to the start of the bristles.
You can reduce the top just less than half it is now, if you go to half then the bristle staples or whatever the name is what holds the bristles in will start to show. Just cut it down with a wood saw, works a treat :)

Yep tried it on an old one first to see how much I could cut off, tried grinding it but too long winded so just took a woodsaw to it and cut quite easily

A surform (round and flat) is good for rasping.
Use an octopus to fix it to the workmate, they are difficult to hold !

Cut it straight down the middle of the stock width ways using a jigsaw.
