has anyone had experience in hiring cleaning equipment out? good and bad. years ago a local carpet cleaner used to hire me stuff that he had sitting and i could not afford to buy. with all these floods I thought it might be an idea to pick up some flood equipment and store for those sad events.

It could be worked two ways profit or non profit? helping other cleaners out like many that have had problems with floods in the past or just a side line for profit?

people always need money and will sell stuff they think they don't need. as we all know this is the time if you have the cash to pick up a bargain.

problem with hire, is users never look after it like it's thier own equipment and you get a broken machine back. and you can't charge for a new pump in a second hand machine,  or can you

Ian, its a good idea in principal, however it really needs to carried out as a stand alone business.
Also regarding floods the companies requiring equipment need lots of it, not just 5-6 dehumidifiers. You have some big players in this market aside from the general hire businesses there is Restoration Express and Corroventa who can call on massive stocks from all over Europe.
One of my colleagues hire bill in Yorkshire last month was 200k.
If you did want to go down this route there should be a lot of gear coming onto the second hand market over the next few months, would be a good time to stock up.

They will send you an info pack through the post if you contact them.

Sounds like a reasonable add-on to your business.  One risk I would ensure is covered is Product Liability e.g. the situation where the item hired-out injures someone or damages their property.  Of course your insurer will advise you on this.  From a electrical perspective, PAT testing to verify safety would be necessary.
