What is a window?
« on: September 19, 2007, 07:54:26 pm »
I see some W/C's on here charge per window, does this mean each pane, or each full frame i.e. 3 windows, top, side and bottom.

Dam lost 3 today >:(

We started at the same Time SonOfFormby.  I have lost one, and only because her brother decided to do them cheaper...

But, I may be losing more soon.  Gotta put my prices up a bit.  the fiver cleans were far too low :D

Anyhoo, hope the rest of your work is going well :)

Oh, and a window would be a set of panes making up a unit.  for example, a bay window would be 3 panes (2 sides and the front)
Basically a window is whatever is in the frame unit (2 panes, 1 pane, 3 panes etc...)

As far as i'm concerned a window is two panes, maybe with a small opener above one of them. A bay with 5 panes = two and a half windows. A patio door =1 and a half widows. Each 2 panes in a conservatory is one window, one and a half windows if the panes go all the way to the floor. Small single panes like a toilet window, counts as half a window. Hopes this helps, Dai

I have only lost 1 customer due to WFP, the rest have gone because of price increase, but the way I look at it if I lose 1, and 5 wear the rise I am earning the same for doing less, and in all honesty, that is the way things are going for me. How about you? Are you going well.

p.s. are you WFP?

Got the old neck ache yet lee? and the shakey arms reaching over conservatories? Another month and the old hands start splitting, good isn't it? Loads of drawbacks but the good days are really good! :)

My first seven months as a window cleaner and so far it's been a real rollercoaster one or two crappy customers that really wind me up - god people are so thick and inconsiderate. A few problems with equipment failing/wearing out. Trying to collect when they are never in. Locked gates even after a phone call. Higher overheads than I planned for and of course the weather! At least by buying your round you don't have those depressing days with no work. But overall its miles better than factory/nightshift work.

I used to be a postie, and though this job is harder, it is far more rewarding.Buying a round is a big outlay, and I have lost a few, but gained alot more, and at better prices.I am about on schedule to finish the work I bought, and the new jobs I picked up with a few days spare to canvass more work ;D.

p.s. Glad to see we're all in the same boat with the locked gates etc ::)

I would say a window is what you can do off of one ladder stand.  But even then you get big windows and small windows.

I look at the frame and pane as 1 window.
Whatever fits in the hole in the wall is a window to me.

I used to look at the size of the window to decide on a price, but now i just work out how long the job should take and price it like that.
I usually price on £20 - £25 per hour.

Did a 1st clean on a big house today and did it in an hour.
I priced this at £40 thinking it would take me longer plus it was a 1st clean.
Customer well happy and happy to pay the price because of the quality of work.
Would have taken me alot longer if i was Trad.

a window is whatever fits in the hole in the wall. One pane or five panes, all one window, and Dai, lifes too short to try and price windows like that.

A window is the complete frame, ask a double glazing fitter

I tend to work around priciple of 'one window' as being anything I can reach standing in one position and without bending down. If I have to move then it becomes more than one window. I have to be flexible of course. If the window is 2mtr tall and 1mtr wide then that is 'one window'. I also take into consideration other time consuming obstacles.

Works for me and used to provide an income of around £25 + per hour trad. I'm currently moving over to WFP so it will be interesting to see the difference tween the two.

I was packing up two days ago when a woman comes up and asks for a price. Her house was 1 up and 2 down at the front and 2 up 2 down at the back and small back garden. I was two tired to give it proper thought and so said, £10 per month or 13 every other month. She jumped at it. "I thought it would be a lot more than that. When can you start?" She also said she's expecting to pay quite a bit more on the first clean as they haven't been cleaned in a while.

Those who appreciate the service and are willing to pay for it are out there so don't sell yourself short peoples.

Im traditional at the moment, but Im looking at wfp...

I figure I can safely lose 10 - 15 customers and if the rest wear the rise I will have lost nothing (I assume the loss rate will be far less than this as I do a really thorough job Iv been told...)

Gaining about 5 custys a week so far :)  leaflets and door knocking is quite a good strategy :)
