Is this a good price for a van?
« on: September 04, 2007, 02:32:40 pm »
I have just been offered a  CITROEN RELAY 2.0 HDi LWB on a 2003 plate for £4000

Its WHITE no rust and 36k on the clock full service history. and no sign writting, oh has triple roof bars included.

I need to carry a 1000 litre tank for wfp sys etc
As I do not have a clue about vans etc I thought I would get your points of view before I said yes or no to it.

Cheers for any help I get on this one.

Ian

take it, that is auction price but with the advantage of private sale. My dad was a car dealer and trust me that sounds amazing, it also has the 2.o hdi, plenty of go and very reliable ( was in a 2.0 hdi taxi with 330000 on the clock ! ) and only 36 k on the clock, dont leave it any longer, it will be snapped up at that price, Luke

I know the van is gen and not dodgy, it does not have a bulk head, and it not from an auction it is a private sale.
The van has 3 seats and is not a taxi

Ian,

I bought an 04 Ducato (same van) 1900 SWB last year with 36k, cost me £6,000 (no vat) I reckon I got a bargain, so yours sounds too good to be true.

Cheers,

Ian

It should have it on the registration document.  Failing that, there will be a plate either under the bonnet or in the door frame giving the GVW (gross vehicle weight).  This is the maximum the vehicle can weigh.  Take the vehicle to a weighbridge, weigh it and deduct the weight from the GVW.  What's left if how much you can put in it, including everything - driver/passenger/fuel/equipment/tank/water etc etc .

If you are going to carry a 1000 litre tank and work say 2 men from it you will need a minimum of 1400kg payload.

Water 1 tonne
Tank & cage (Pls dont tell me its an unbaffled IBC) another 100 kg
Poles bits and bobs, reels can soon get to 100 kg
Fuel 75 kg
2 x average size people 160 kg

That little lot adds up to  errmmmmm  ummmmmmm (Gets calculator out) ohh look 1425 kg.  OK changed my mind u need 1500 kg payload with 2 ppl

,ve had a quick trawl sround the net and the best estimate I can come up with for payload on that van is 1325 kg payload. Thats on the 3.5 tonne gross weight version.

It does sound like a HELLUVA deal though I must say. :)

Some intersesting reading regarding oveloading

http://www.walthamforest.gov.uk/index/business/trad-standards/overloaded-vehicle.htm

Around where I am there are often D.O.T. spot checks and they look out for "White van man" in particular. They pull you in and are all over your van like a rash. If they suspect overloading you get whisked to the nearest weighbridge pronto.

Hi
Brightnclean is right.

The maximum size tank you would put in that size van is 650l. With a full tank of water and fuel, and all your gear you will be on the payload limit.

If the van's kosher he must have the registration document, the model no is on there.

If he hasn't got the document, don't touch it :o

oh yeah, some people arent very clued up about where they can find the model numbers so dont just throw away a good deal, me and my dad have gone to look at vehicles and the owners dont have a clue what model the van is or where to find it. For 30 pound you can phone the DVLA to find out if the vehicle is kosher or not, my dad would always do this when car dealing or buying private. Ask to look at his papers too. If the vin looks dodgy ( rub turps on it to see if its resprayed ), check if the windscreen one hasnt been tampered with. Also do the front and back number plates have matching garage names, is the clock right ( sign if battery has been disconnected ) Luke
