I  have fired a few customers over the years for various reasons, much better without them as there are plenty of good customers which I enjoy working for.

Pete, for a contract to be legally binding consideration must be passed between at least 2 parties. In law consideration translates as something of tangible or financial value. In this case that would have meant the carpets being cleaned and therefore the custy obligation to pay the agreed (invitation to treat) amount.

You did state in your post: "We agreed the price and I went today to do the job".  I guess it's always better to 'pre-condition' these type of statements until you've actually inspected the prospective job.  Binding contracts can be made verbally (although proving this can be difficult to establish if it's not recorded. . . think of the telephone calls you make to official bodies ... this call may be recorded for training purposes ... is it ?!).  You appear to have done the correct thing by walking away, but do bear in mind my point.

Best regards

It came close today 13th floor

Booked a job in for today for 1300hrs unfortunately the other two jobs over ran contacted customer advised that I was running late and rescheduled for 1600 not a problem. On arrival 13th floor overlooking a football game (I hate football) a look see is needed before equipment out of van, dose the lift work, state of carpet. On inspection advised customer new carpet but he wouldn’t have it you clean! Tried to explain you have more blue tack on your carpet than pub has gum and the carpet is shot, anyway after an agreement I went and got equipment and started then the nightmares started!  But me being me cool calm a collective a compromise was reached and walked a way with what I quoted.

Pete

Thanks for the info both previous jobs were for QC (both on hols but I trust them but they can be forgetful)

Maybe the language used was a bit cruder than that Mark, but they got the message all right.

A slightly different slant on not being paid.

A few months ago I cleaned a large Chinese rug for a family who had just moved back from the US. Arrived at the job to find that they were only halway through having their "Mock Tudor" mansion built and were actually staying in a caravan closeby.

Asked where the rug could be found and was directed to a large lorry trailer on stilts....Turns out that all their worldly possessions were still in there so had to hunt around for the rug.

Finally found rug and after hauling it down from the trailer and walking across a muddy field to my van I was finally underway.

Cleaned rug a few days later and on returning it was told to put it back in trailer.
I did this and was paid by chq.

Lodged chq and lo and behold chq was made of rubber.

Called customer who apologised and made some excuse bout a delay in transferring funds from the US to UK.
She then gave me another chq with £30.00 extra for the inconveniance

Chq bounced again so this time I drove straight there without phoning and was paid in cash with the last £5.00 being in small change!!

All this from a family who had 2 new his n her bmw's and were have a damng 500k mansion built.

strange but true
