I could be wrong, but you dont see many cleaning personelle posting on this site...usually its the proprietors and the self-employed.

Out of interest do you have much trouble attracting labour in London? It is generally assumed by folk living outside of London that there is no shortage of willing labour, but we're probably wrong.

Cheers

There are lots of workers in London but retaining trustworthy, reliable staff is another thing high staff turnover. Had two cleaners doing flyers yesterday claimed they done 8 hours between them, but only had about an hour of flyers, if they are going to be dishonest with me, who is paying them I can't really trust them to be in clients houses by themselves, that is just one example,

Most cleaners get £5.50 min wage, which is great down here as there are may people willing to work for £3-£3.50 per hour I pay £7.50 but staff are not loyal because of demand for good cleaners they can shuffle between jobs and get up to £12 even £15 ph working for themselfs or for someone else! hence high staff turnover and no loyalty. that is my opinion anyway :-\

Yes, its because of all that that i work alone. But of course that means i dont make a 'profit' as such, i work for my salary. Whatever comes in and doesnt get spent on business expenses goes to me and the tax man etc. I just dont have it in me to make my cleaning 'thing' into a big business, i'm not sure its for me. I kinda enjoy plodding along at my own pace. I usually get through 3 houses a day and try to clear about £10-£11 an hour b4 expenses(although as i said i dont charge by the hour).

I've never quite worked out the relation between work done and hourly rates. Fair enough i can see why like when i've worked in a shop or a call centre they pay by the hour because you are physically there for the whole time and only do as much work as comes in etc. But when i clean for people i dont want to be accused of charging for time i havent been there...i can work very steadily and throughly usually and having all my own cleaning stuff to hand enables me to do much better and quicker job. Some people would do more than me in the same time, some less. I suppose thats the difficulty of running a company, you can probably only get away with paying your staff by the hour, even if you charge by the job?
