« on: July 25, 2007, 06:20:15 pm »
Hi guys,
If you have a carpet which has a synthetic pile but jute backing how easy would it be to cause shrinkage or cause browning?
Should be ok shouldn't it as long as i don't soak the thing?
Thanks for your help in advance

I'd say impossible to shrink and as for browning this is a mystery to me. Never come across it or caused it. I think you need to saturate a light coloured carpet to achieve browning.

Is it a woven carpet? If not, what's the primary backing?

If it is a tufted carpet with a jute/hessian primary backing, it will shrink VERY easily and possibly brown too (use acidic rinse to reduce risk). If it is tufted with a polyprop primary and jute/hessian secondary backing, I wouldn't expect a shrinkage or browning problem so long as Best Practice procedures are followed.

If the carpet is woven, treat it as if Belgian Wilton.

Safe and happy cleaning :)

I know what you're trying to say Rob, and I'm doing a bit of "nit picking", but jute doesn't shrink, it swells :o  You can't add water to a fibre and make it smaller.  The swelling fibres create tensions in the fabric whether it be a tufted carpet with a hessian backing or a mix of fibres as in a woven carpet ie jute and cotton or jute and polyprop.

In the end, the effect/consequences are the same, but the reason is different.

Safe and happy cleaning :)
