carpet protector
« on: July 04, 2007, 11:11:56 pm »
Hi guys

I am just wondering how many of you using carpet protector and which brand?
And is it really beneficial for the customer?
I know that we can make a lot of money as an extra income without much effort, but I have never trust these products to sell it to our clients.

Thank you for your reply

Regards

Have always given my custys the option, but most would rather just wait for resoiling then book again than pay the extra price, saying that some carpet fitters i know, do pass on work after they have laid new carpets, and which have not been pre-treated nice easy work.

It's easier when the bulk of your customers have cream wool carpets, kids and a labrador.

Why would anyone pay for protector on a brown synthetic piece of junk? If that's your market then you are flogging a dead horse.

How much do they protect though? Is it just spills etc, so you have a chance to get to it and wipe it up in time? What happens when you dont wipe it up - does it stil penetrate or does it evaporate?

You really do have to labour the point that they must act on it straight away.

In fact after I have sold it, I pull it away form them.

I give lots of advice on spills and give away a spotter with every job and that it's better to call me if they are not sure.

Had a Client the other week who has got me several new clients. I went back to do her lounge and a spare bedroom, as I had done the rest of the house last month.

£170 for clean and apply protector.

She rings up the following week, she spilt red wine on it.

Went round next day and it all came out with cold water using a CFR tool. She started to get her cheque book out but I said no charge and she was over the moon.

When I'm putting it down I'm always conscious of the fact that you better do it right otherwise it will come back to bite you.

So I always acid rinse and check, apply as per instructions and give it a bloody good rake.

I'd be interested in any courses on protector and how to sell to retail.

Hi mike

But that’s not economical for you if you have to go back every time customer makes a mess on the carpet?
After all you only charged her £170.00 for clean and protect.
So what of area did you do for that money?

It's the only one I have gone back on. The prices I charge are relatively high compared to some. I don't say to people I'll spot for free, but if a client did call I would.

This lady has spent £300 with me in 2 months and led me to 2 similar clients. It's good business to give more than expected.

I think your missing the point, a happy customer by doing what Mike does will come back every year and you will make lots more money out of them.

Stain Insurance is great because it always keeps you in the customers mind so they dont forget you.

I'm with mike givers gain he's got more work doing the right thing showing there's a man that can and will if asked " if you dont ask you dont get" by cleaning that red wine she will be happy to refer you again and again, I myself have cleaned custys capets and uph and within a week or so something happens I show willingness and booked in when in the area and the gain comes back not to bite you but to complement you. Referals are key in this line of work dont forget givers gain!

Hi guys

Well I don’t doubt that and you are right I will do the same with our regular clients. But what I am trying to point out is that how many carpet cleaning you guys do that offer protection on every job?
If you look at my first post you see that I basically like to point out that do you sell protection as a regular thing to make extra money?
And do you encourage the client to buy it?

I personally don’t trust it as much.

P.S. And which product is best to use, because there are so many companies that promoting their Owen and is hard to know which one is the best.

Of course there are companies propmoting their own products, hardly likely to get Robert Saunders recommending Solutions.

You will have to buy and try, or go for a well known, tried and tested product, or you could just buy the cheapest you can find and hope it works. It might be just as good as others.

Alltec did a training seminar with videos, one of which you got the client to look at while you cleaned their carpets, but that was about 10 years ago.

I use Craftex and it seems to do the trick.

However if there was a 'Rolls Royce' of protectors that was way better than the rest I would use that.

I think Dave Liohona knws of one but it is from the states.

Going back on topic, Paul Elliott offers a free cleaning touch up (oo er) when he sells protector on just cleaned carpets.

I have always used the Prochem stuff, simply 'cos it's easy to get hold of and does "what it says on the tin".

I only recommend it to a custy if their carpet warrants it but always tag it onto a written quote under "optional extras".

It can be a bit of a no-win situation. The custy usually doesn't see the point in paying for protector if the carpet doesn't come up 100% clean. ("Why protect an already stained carpet?")

On the other hand if it comes up 100% clean they take the stance that they don't need it! (Why do I need protector if you can clean it 100%?")

Hi guys

Well thanks for your response, but as I can see so far, not many of you get to do high percentage of protectors, or maybe you don’t like to sell it so much?
