Oscillating Pad or Heated Bonnet ?
« on: June 12, 2007, 07:59:16 pm »
Hi Colleagues

I'm still in the equipment consideration phase (hoping to expand) and the Challenger Oscillating Pad (OP) machine is now tending to front my list (it was the Dryfusion or Thermadry on previous posts).  However, just to get some advice from members, can Challenger OP users give me (or others) some practical information about its performance, perhaps by comparing with the heated bonnet types ?

Many thanks

Pete (JS2)

Visit Kleenkuip's forum.............carpetologist........video of o/p versus rotary ! You might be surprised at the results and Padman has been using this system for 20 years

Ian there is no advantage at all, its just a gimmick ::) ::) I've use these machines and the heat unit is too small to produce enough heat to penetrate the pad, it might get warm but nothing that will make any difference to the cleaning.

just more waffle to sell a rotory bonnet machine

the video is rubbish it does not show the difference between orbital & bonnet cleaners, what it shows is the difference between a man-made fibre pad and a cotton pad, that is making the difference in the cleaning, not the machine.

I have both these machines and have done this test myself.

Also depends on the product being used and there have been a lot of people taking up the o/p method after testing it themselves

I have also used both rotary and o/p and the o/p absolutely outperforms the rotary particularly when using encapsulation.

does'nt really take much figuring out, when you understand how they both work !

Hi Colleagues

Many thanks for the replies so far, but nothing said up 'til now is making me that convinced with the Oscillating Pad (OP) method above say Texatherm, standard-bonnet or DF process :P.  I understand that gouge marks/swirls are less likely with this (OP) technique, but can it do a deepish clean and is there a realistic chance of abrastive damage to a carpet greater than that possible with pre-HWE agitation (e.g. Sebo Duo-ing after a pre-spray) ?????  At about £1900 a piece for the Challenger OP machine (or £300 for an Oreck), I really do need a bit more advice before committing myself to the purchase of a robust OP machine.

Regards

Pete

I think you need to clearly define what this new machine will be used for.  To be honest, if your main market is residential, a D/F, Challenger, Tex etc would be too heavy and cumbersome to be used on many jobs. And carrying upstairs is a right pain.

Some people find it difficult to use an OP machine, and others can't get on with a rotary, so make sure you're comfortable with your selection.

For myself, I use my Low Moisture heated pad system primarily for commercial and as a problem solver for residential. I rarely combine HWE and padding. As Mike says, the pad doesn't feel very warm but this is because it is designed to not hold heat very well, so the heat passes through to the carpet, which then cools pretty quickly afterwards too.  If you used a cotton pad, it should feel warmer for longer.

Safe and happy cleaning :)

Hi Ken

My most regular tasks (as a part time CC'er only) are residential, not commercial.  I agree that the weight issue of the bolder machines would be a disadvantage for transport and movement.  Of course the smaller Oreck machine would seem ideal for domestic, but having read some of the earlier postings the impression I get is that it probably isn't substantial or productive enough for commercials.  Having been doing cleaning on and off since 2001, I realise that there's no single champion machine that does any job and suits every situation.  However I like the feature of having a rotary or oscillator for problem cases, since being HWE-only there's some carpets that worry me !!

(Thanks Mike for letting me know that you have a machine for sale - I'll bear this in mind)

Best regards

Hi all

A bit of advice that i can offer is dont buy a oreck for the purpose
of useing it for a single cleaning system on its own.
It is much to light for cleaning carpets, the only bennifit you will get with an oreck is its a good agatateing machine for domectic only.
If you are only doing domectic cleaning i personaly would put the money into a better HWE machine.

As for your original question Oscillating Pad or Heated Pad
personally can not answer fully as i dont own or never used a larger Oscillating machine such as the challenger. But i do use the texatherm system plus charley pads both very good in there own right ie on commercial carpet and the texatherm rotary is a brillant rotary machine can used for other things ie hard floor stripping and cleaning i also use it on wooden floors. If you learn to use this rotary to its full potional it will be a sound investment.

I was thinking about buying an Oscillating machinre  but was asking
myself the same question as your self how much more would i bennifit from it.

ie would it be quicker over large areas and would it do a better job than say texatherm our charley pads.

just to clarify the Oreck Orbitor is the light 12inch machine which (as said) is only good for domestic work, the Oreck low boy is the 17inch big industrial machine designed for heavy commercial work.
