Looking for cheaper alternatives to seal the van floor other than Protecta-Kote.
A mate suggested Yacht varnish with a handful of sand mixed in to provide the Anti-slip.
Has anyone else used a different product to seal their floor, if so what was the result?

I took my ply floor out as water will find it's way underneath, if you leave it in this will result in rapid corrosion of the floor pan.

£70 for 4ltr Protecta-kote Kit covered my Dispatch with two good coats. Then I used the original ply floor to make a cover for the tank. Had enough to Protecta -kote this and the wheel arch covers.

Any water spillage now just beads and flows to the bulk head were I simply dab it up with a bit of scrim.

Like the previous post I wouldn't cut corners on this. especially if the van is worth a few quid.

If no one has tried any other option it will have to be Prorecta-Kote.
Don't know about £70 a 4ltr tin though, sure i've seen it advertised for around £45 somewhere. Will let you know if i find it again.

its sound a lot for a 4ltrs can , im also in the same boat as you need to paint back of van shortly , if i find a cheaper prices for prorecta kote i let you no

Found it again. It's on www.andwat.co.uk for £52.88 inc vat, don't know about delivery cost. Sorry don't know how to put link up.
£75 is for a kit which includes roller etc.

there is a product called " Premium Protection " which is a black bitumen based paint used for painting the hull of narrow boats.
It dries to a hard shiny surface, is designed to be under water and also to be hard wearing.
 It will be a good deal cheaper than protectacote, I don't know whether it will be as good, but it could well be a cheaper option.

there no need to buy kit , just paint , and get a paint roller at b&q , will a standard roller do or does it need to be a special type of roller

The small 4" roller like a honeycomb,nylonn/ plastic feel to it, used for textured coating about £2.50 or £4 for tray and roller, need a couple of cheap 1" or 2" brushes too.

You need to make sure the base you are covering is clean and free from any loose bits. Mine was like new after lifting the ply up. You will need something to give the 1st coat a Key to adere to. Heavy scourer or very fine sandpaper, then wipe away any dust.

mine will be a new floor , i will have to key floor first , i would like to ply line floor afterwards do you think this will be ok

To be honest I can’t see any point other than a bit of extra sound proofing.
If you place the ply on top of the protecta- kote any water underneath will soon rot the ply and maybe start to smell musty. You could use Marine Ply with a coating but then that’s a lot of money for a little bit of sound proofing.

I used Protectacote on my van I was more than happy with the way it went on, I used the brush instead of the roller but it was still easy to apply, The smell did linger for a while though.

One point i think pureandclean has overlooked,well maybe protecta kote is antislip, dont think the other one will be even if you did put sand in it. Protectakote i believe is made of rubber properties, ill check on that l8r.
