Running your reel from in the van
« on: June 03, 2007, 08:49:45 am »
I think I am wasting a lot of energy lifting my reel out of the van for every job. I have to do this to get the angle right to feed the hose out. Idealy I could do with an extendable sliding platform to pull out with the reel being able to swivel freely. Anyone invented this yet? Maybe it could be mounted with a thrust bearing underneath or used in conjunction with one of those directional hose changing thingys from B&Q?
There must be something out there I can't see Dina-rod people lifting reels in and out all day.

Sounds like the kind of thing I'm thinking of, but I reckon it would need to be much more beefy and would need some good sized bolts to hold it to the floor at full extension. I think another solution might be to mount it on top of my tank on a swivel then run the hose out of one of the three doors available. Could be hard to wind back up then though.

I was looking at a vehicle with a tail-lift some timne back.  I suppose it could be possible to bolt something to that.  I was considering doing things as well as the window cleaning at the time but decided not to so got something a bit lighter.

How about bolting the reel to the van floor, just inside the back door.  Have a plywood platform also bolted to the floor with a hinged section that allows it to be folded up behind the door when its closed, and folds down horizontal so sticks out beyond the door when it's open.  On the end of the folding bit is one of those "multidirectional hose guide thingies".  You would need some simple stop arrangement so it didn't fold down beyond the horizontal.

End of hose is always kept ready fed through the guide.

Stop van - open door - fold down ply section which takes hose beyond the door before needing to change direction - off you go!!

Might be a bit awkward  reeling in again - need to experiment with positioning of hosereel so handle is easy to reach and turn.

That'll be £5,000 consultant fee, thank you ;D

Cheers,

Ian

to stop it spinning when reeling in thinking of a locking pin like a mitre saw if you know what i mean.

must admit i use a hose guild and find i have no props as have it set as close to the doors as i can get it. the mico bore evens go between doors when open so i have allready 180 degrees .

what i dont get is why i see so many pics of systems and the reel is fiited well inside van  ??? ??? surly it must be hard work climbing in van to reel in.

It really needs to be in metal, Ply may be strong but the everyday abuse and soaking it will get, ply won't last you to long, I'm in the Process of making my self  swivel plates to mount on top of my trailer, lift it on at the begining of the day and remove it at the end of the day, just saves me lifting it in and out all day long.

i saw a van with one of those grey hoselock spinny things, you know they have 4 sliding rollers on four sides

people use it to attach it to the corner of a house so it can go round the house,

anyways my point is, make a hold in the back of the van, and attach the slidy think so the holes match up, and bobs your uncle

wait ill get a pic

Keep it coming guys! I don't know if I have enough room to easily wind my reel whilst it's still in the van, I prefer to work with the option of locking it all up too. I rekon the multidirectional thingamy bob could be utilized somewhere.

Or....... how about a sprung loaded hose reel that could wind itself back in - no more coils of pipe around your feet just enough hose being pulled out whilst you walk with it attatched to your hip.

I know a chap who has one of those Hozelock roller guides (as above) fixed to his Van door. The door can be opened right up (Vito) which then allows him to feed the end of the microbore through it and then reel it out in any direction.

my reels are bolted onto brackets fitted inside my van roof, its brill 100mtr microbore takes no time at all to pull out & is dead easy to reel back up.i made some rollers for the roof so the hose reels up straight every time,
with loads of space on the van floor for all my other items.
in my next van ill be mounting my reels to the tank frame  so i can mount my poles above the tank in tubes,at the moment there down the side of the tank, not realy happy with this.
learning all the time. ;)
