Number of jobs in a year?
« on: February 12, 2007, 06:51:16 pm »
Theres always the question of prices and profitability. Then there how long it takes to do a certain job and how do CCs get the phone to ring. So lets see just how many are getting that phone to ring and the jobs created by the calls. I will kick it off, my last financial year shows 626 jobs done.

As a comparison, the last time I did solely carpet cleaning (some years ago) this would have given me a turnover of £56,340.

if you take 6 weeks holiday a year and don't work weekends then you have 230 days available.

if we accept that Jan & Feb are slow months and we only work 3 full days this cuts it down to 214

so if we average 3 jobs a day that's 642

if we average 2 jobs a day that's 428

if we average between 2 & 3 jobs that's 535

This is pretty much an irrelevant question, as the answers will not lead to any great conclusion.

If the question was related to how much you turned over last year, then that would at least give you an average price of each job.

There are likely to be people out there who are only doing 400 jobs a year, but turning over £80k+, there will be others doing 700 jobs and only earning £30k or less.

Ian,
Your last paragraph is obvious. The other points you make have all been dealt with at some time or other thats why this time it is purely based on the annual number of jobs. There is a reason why I asked this conclusionless question, which I will reveal in due course when more have had an opportunaty to vote.

Cant see how many can do 2-3 jobs a day 5-6 days a week you must have been in this business for years or spend an absolute fortune in marketing each year?

Fair play wish i could would be loaded. Its mostly my own fault for being to lazy with my markerting. But that is gonna change i have 10 000 brand spanking new leaflets to get out. Also brainstorming ideas for a website, re-designing my quote form layout and also putting together a healthy home newsletter article aswell as producing various letters to which will be sent out to commercial premises. Plus looking at placing new adverts suppose i have been quite busy with it all actually now i come to think about it lol.

I posted this poll to try and get a comparison between mainly portable users and TM users as I also posted a similar post on Truck Mounters forum. The figures on this forum show that 72% do less than 600 jobs a year and 28% more than 600 jobs.
The truck Mounters forum show 43% doing less than 600 jobs per year and 57% doing more than 600, wincluding 35% who do more than 900 jobs a year. Now I realise that this by no means an exact science, especially as there are many variables, but, this does show that in general TM operators do more jobs (In some cases by a considerable margin) than portable users. I personally have doubled the number of jobs I used to do for the same effort, since upgrading to a TM. perhaps the next question should be - if I get a bigger more powerful TM will I be able to do even more jobs per year, for the same effort.

I don't think you'll do more jobs, or be any quicker with a befy TM compared to yours only think you may get is even quicker drying carpets oh and a lower bank balance.

Nothing wrong with a bigger TM but you've done the hardest bit by converting.

What it means is Truck Mount owners have succeeded in the Carpet Cleaning Business.

Made marketing pay and then used the multiplier effect.

Which gives them confidence to invest in a Truck mount to get a return.

Most started with a portable .

Some portable users stay that way for life style reasons.

dont forget there alot of complete beginers on here, theres none of them on TMers, most been going 5 years plus, as most started with portables, so they are further up the road in the business, very rare somone will start with a TM.

Dave how about buying a 14" head wand might speed you up, and a hydra force sprayer speed things up too. or do you have these.

Craig,
In truth I am not slow, could work faster if I cut some of the process out, not going to do that as I have a pride in what I do and I am happy doing 626 or so a year. The answer is to get more out of those jobs, not to get more jobs, and this is my aim. I do use an inline sprayer and I think 12" is a sufficient wand width

Last year i made a consious effort to up my average job cost, although customers were only wanting 1 carpet cleaning I would have a min charge of £59, but explain if they required another room cleaned the price isn't £59 per room.

It seemed a bit confusing at first but some rooms would only come to say £55 and then you get the dining room which is usually smaller and you'd get another £40, my average job ticket last year was around the £120 mark.

If I pushed protector more I could have alot higher average.

Thats my problem too, getting more out of the small one room jobs.  Somedays I'll do 5 small jobs for say £300 9-5pm and then another day do one job for £300 in 4-5 hours.  Its getting more of the latter is the hard part.

Starting an ad with a £20 saving for three or more rooms cleaned over 100sqft each.  Will see how it gos.

3 jobs at £100 each every day and Id be happy.
