Mike i had a high top Renault Traffic a few years ago infact it was on an l plate and had very high mileage on it and we hammered it for 2 years without any worries, we then sold it and bought a newer High top Master and that was sh#te got rid within 3 months, perhaps you,ve just got a lemon.

I bought my Trafic after it had done 37,000 miles.  The gearbox needed replacing at 39,000 miles - about six weeks inside the three year warranty.  I had a record of previous work done on it too from the previous owner and it had been in to rectify some problem with clutch disengagement and an issue with the clutch cylinder.  I have had the rear door handle mechanism fail three times now and need fixing.  The RAC did it for me twice and I paid on another occasion as it was going in for something else anyway.  My most recent problem was the pump that squirts the windscreen.  Currently awaiting a replacement to get it through the MOT.
OK the clutch issues were dealt with under warranty by the previous owner and the gearbox was replaced free of charge under warranty as well during my ownership.  The rest of it is niggling stuff but still time consuming.  That's the biggest pain really.  The time and hassle of getting stuff sorted out and waiting to get it in for repair.  If the vehicle can be used while awaiting repair then it's not so bad but often, the time lost for work is greater than the repair bill.
My fears may prove unfounded but I don't trust my van.  However, the loan on it has 3 years and seven months to run and I prefer to keep it until the loan is paid up.  By that time it will be getting on for eight years old and, at my current rate of usage, will have done about 90,000 miles - not particularly high for a van.  I just hope that it trundles along without major parts going wrong until then.  Some sort of resale or part-x value would be helpful too.

I had a Renault Megane car, bought from a main dealer, one previous owner with low milage and full history - what a pile of crap, kept it for 6 months, lots of niggling problems and then it would just decide not to start at random intervals, the last time 25 miles from home after I had been fleeced for pick n mix at the cinema, traded it in for a Honda CR-V that afternoon.

Hi Mike

Discs and pads are considered fair wear and tear items as are bulbs, filters etc - so are never replaced under warranty.
But £72.00 per hour is difficult to justify.
Aren't these available as after market parts yet? If so then your local motor factors will have them at a fraction of the dealer price.

As far as new van as concerned, it's my opinion that you cant go very far wrong with a new Transit or Transit connect - even despite the fact that most of them are no longer built in Southhampton.

Hi Mike
If the brakes are not under the  manufacturers warranty, why should it invalidate the rest of the van's warranty?

When my time is up with this van, I don't think I will be going for another Trafic/Vivaro/Primastar.  It's a great pity really as they are a very comfortable drive for a van and I do like that 6 speed box.  However, I would happily sacrifice some of the smoothness and the comforts if I had a van that I feel I could trust.
My fears may be totally unfounded though and are only based on what has already happened.  Nothing else that I can base them on really.

It's hard to say what will be around in late 2010 as far as vans go but I would like to go brand new next time and try to pay for it over three years and trade in for a new one each time the warranty is expiring.  A transit or maybe some LDV van are the likely candidates at the moment.  However, the way everyone is banging on about emissions etc, maybe there will be a few more LPG vans to see or maybe even hydrogen powered vehicles.

I have a 04 plate Primastar, just had it 2 months and had the ps pump leak onto alternator and set alight. Spotted it though and Nissan replaced all damaged bits.

I have just extended the warranty for 2 years at a cost of £400 including breakdown cover. Gives nice peace of mind and well worth it if anyone is in the same position.
