Debt Recovery
« on: February 08, 2007, 02:57:22 pm »
Can anyone recommend a Debt Recovery Service.

And what is the minimum they will recover.

I've written off a few hundred quid in the last 2 years and don't want to keep doing it in the future.

KNOCK KNOCK, who's there?, YOUR WINDOW CLEANER!!!!!!!! that normally works for me?

As for writing off debts, what was the reason? If you can't collect payment why pay a debt collection service who will return the same result? I send a County Court Summons, find this usually works for me.
Covering Hampshire, Dorset, Surrey, Berkshire

First thing you need to do is send the customer a letter by recorded deliver with details of the amount outstanding, when it needs to be paid and then what action you intend to take to recover the amount. I think you have to wait for a certain amount of time for them to respond to the letter. After this, you can go to https://www.moneyclaim.gov.uk and setup a claim. It costs about £30 I think and a further amount if and when baliffs are used but you get all this amount back when they pay up.

We have used it successfully to get money owed for some goods we sold. A £30 invoice ended up costing the bloke £170!!!

What if...

You are owed £20. You start the court process and pay a £30 fee to do so. Court sends a summons to the person owing you £20. They get worried so send you the £20. You have your £20, but you've spent £30 starting the court process.  ???

Hi again

This company starts by writtting letters for you.

So when they ask you for the amount you are claiming for, just add the extra fee to your bill for the debt agency charges......I think... ::)

I would be very careful with debt recovery companys and only go with 1 that has been recommended by someone who has actualy had the compant recover some money for them.
There are alot of "debt recovery" companies that do nothing more than send out letters, alot of them say they do personal visits ect but never do. Some companies use a hard sell aproach and want you to sign up to a years subscription...dont.

I would use the court service to enforce collection, if your prepaired to take all the steps through the county court the end result is the court orders the debtor to pay, if he doesnt pay he will be held in contempt and could even be sent down.

As I said, we've used Moneyclaim online and they did the trick. They are a government agency.
