Surflo Backpack question
« on: January 16, 2007, 07:30:06 pm »
Hi Guy's
On my first job today that needed the back pack, filled it up trundled along to the windows, switched the backpack on and nothing, dead, ::)  I knew the battery was fully charged so checked the connections and they were all ok. so chucked it back into the car and waited until I got home to check it out.

Once home  I got the destruction  manual out  ;D one thing it said,  was to disconnect the pump from the pcb and connect the pump directly to the battery, so I did this and the pump worked,  Aha I thought the pcb is NFG?? so connected everything back up, and while the pcb was in my hand I pressed the switch and it was sticking a bit, so kept pressing it until it was free and all worked well  ???.
Now I have only used it a couple of dozen times, so I don't expect to be messing around with it just yet, I only got it just a week before christmas so its not as if its been abused in any way.
2 Questions for you?
1. has anyone had a similar problem as the above.
2. so I have a spare does anyone know what size the fuse is? the one in mine has just an E printed on it and not its size, I can work it out but don't want to invalidate my warranty if I have to relace a fuse, and use the wrong size up, even if its 1 amp above the correct rating can invalidate it.

Hi Jeff,

mine does that... stops dead!...

but i have now found the solution to mine anyway....

i dry the damn thing with a tea towel... the battery terminals..

take the lead away from the battery (the one that connects to the pump).... water gets in somehow... i simply wipe it away and it works again....

bear in mind that i work in the rain sometimes...

but try it.

gary.

I was working in the rain today, but got the b/pack straight out the car, I did notice a little damp in there maybe from last week? I'll give it a good wipe out tonight me thinks, thanks for the tip.

I find the area  the battery sits in is always wet and I dont work in the rain and am careful about spilling water down the back. Sometimes the wet area looks like condensation but no idea how that could arise.

Expanding this topic do you guys know where we can buy spare batteries for the back pack?

John,

Cleantech sell spare batteries I believe; but once I bought the same spec battery from Motorworld for a fiver.  It's a common battery and the one I bought was originally designed for those little motorised scooters kids play on.

Also, my first backpack lasted nearly 18 months before needing replacing; and it took some hammer; used every day I worked for 18 months.  I was very pleased with it.

In the end, the switch became a pain; though it still works; but sometimes wouldn't turn off or on when I wanted it too.
