horley and gatwick area, advice please
« on: November 19, 2006, 10:56:28 am »
My mother in law lives in the horley area and my brother in law just down the road, I've been asked to quote in the area and have no idea what the going rates are.  I'm interested in building a round up there as i'll have somewhere to crash for the night if i could earn decent money.

Is there anyone in the area that could tell me what the going rates are for 3 bed semis, 3 bed detached and 4 bed detached.  Also what would you add on for a conservatory?

I'd be quite interested in buying a round if anyone knows of any going which would give me a good start.

As probably most know on here i'm wfp.

Any help and advice would be much appreciated.

Hi Macc,

We charge about a £1 a window £1.50 for leads or Georgian.
It`s not as easy as you might think down here but like anywhere if you keep knocking you can do allright! I only do about 4 days a month but that`s as much as i want! The man to speak to is The Shiner as he has a good business down here and is wfp.

Regards Rob.

I work that area.  Hands off my patch you fiend !!   ;D

I actually live in Crawley but do a lot of my work in surrounding towns because there are a lot terraced houses in Crawley with no rear access.

There are some OK places in the area.  I tend to think in terms of £1 a window hole with a minimum £10.  I add 50% for first cleans usually but charge double if they state that it's a one off.  On some places I charge more if I think the area will carry it.  However, I have had my downfall on this before when someone from one area recommends me for another area - oops !!  I don't usually charge more for leads these days since I went onto WFP. I don't like to say too much about hourly rates on here but with WFP, good access, and decent size properties, it's possible to fly along once you've got past the first clean or two.
Some of the work I've had a long time and it has been allowed to become underpriced.
I don't regard the area as anything special within the southeast generally.  You get all the usual hassles of locked gates etc (I don't do them these days). You can get some nicely priced work if you're prepared to put in the leg work and at some places you will struggle to get the rate you want.  It helps that it is a low unemployment area - mainly due to the airport.`

Hi Rob.
My business is pretty inconsistent really.  I have some very good work and I have some work that is long overdue for a substantial increase.  It has got to the point where new work is starting to carry the old work and I need to do something about this.  It can be difficult imposing large increases at times but I will have to do this on some of my work in the next few months.  It's either that or drop work in favour of better paid work.  I'm not ready to do this to any great degree yet.  This is because I have got quicker and quicker with WFP so I have largish gaps appearing in my workload.
In the past month or so, something seems to have dropped into place with WFP and I've been flying along most of the time.  I've been using WFP for just over a year so it's not before time I suppose.

Macc.
Based on my own experience of the area, I've had a higher proportion of problems in the Court Lodge estate (not getting paid, generally messed about etc.).  I do have two customers in a little private area next to Court Lodge who are OK but generally, I have found that area to be not good for window cleaning.
I don't want to stereotype as I'm sure there are many decent people who live there but it is an area where people are often housed when they don't have a say in the matter.  Perhaps I've just been unlucky around there and you would do better but I've had five customers around there and four of them ripped me off for the money at various times.  Apart from my two regulars, I haven't done any work there in ages.
I am putting it to you as an area to avoid but you may find differently.
