Gutters/facias with WFP
« on: October 21, 2006, 09:34:13 am »
Got a job coming up soon where the white upvc gutters/facias are quite discoloured, I want to do this solely WFP without ladders(access/ground issues).
I'm hoping vikan brush and pure water will do the trick, but am concerned there may be a line left between gutter and facia where the brush cant get in, anyone know of long bristled brushes to get in between or how do you get on?
Cheers

WFP wont remove the discolouration but will make them look better.

We use a pressure washer with extendible lance to do the gutter/ facias as you can get the part WFP cant reach.

Wow! im now a cleanit up god! ;D ;D

anyway... Paul griffin has got it right. Pressure washing is the best way of cleaning them. If you only want to use wfp, realisticly you will only be washing the gutters/ fascia. You would have to go up a ladder to get a decent clean. But if they are stained they will not be able to clean up to like new.

Thanks for replys.
I have some TFR but how to apply it without ladders is the problem, I have a pressure washer but no extendable lance, seems a good idea though, where is the best place to buy these lances, never seen any myself.

Northern tools do the lances

You can apply TFR with an applicator on a standard pole

For jobs like that I find that an Omnipole is OK because you can switch brush heads with little hassle.  I use the cladding brush head with stiffer bristles.  To help remove a line I sometimes turn the head  upside down so that I can force water up between gutter and facia.  It's a good idea to go over these jobs thoroughly because drip marks sometimes occur.  If they are clean then no problem as they disapear when dry.

Only started in this game about a month now with WFP so really cant afford the prices of the lances just now for what is a one off job.

Can someone explain the "You can apply TFR with an applicator on a standard pole" statement, that sounds like it could be the answer at present.

I do alot of these jobs realy good earner, what I do is mix up either gg4 or tfr solution in one of those pump up garden sprayers from B&Q and wind out the nozzle on the end of the lance so that it is only holding on a couple of threads, in this position with the thing pumped up to full pressure you get a powerful jet rather than a fan spray.
I point this directly at the gutter and fascia and apply the solution, leave to soak for 10 mins then brush with vikan and no water, this softens everthing up, then I connect up to outside tap and rinse, they come up lovely.
I usualy only use pure water for glass rinse, this also works on conservatorys.
As for getting behind gutters I also posted on here some time ago for a long bristled brush, but have found that the vikan does do the job just.
The only thing I cant remove Is the grey type staining you find on old white gutters, but this hardly seems to matter to the customers as they are so impressed with how clean they come up.
You will find if you do one job in a street you are almost guranteed to get others wanting the job done aswell.

 Drew,
Are you saying you can get the jet of TFR from floor level to gutter level on a normal 2 floor house and get good coverage on facias and gutters without splattering the rest of the house/neighbours/cars/windows/yourself?
Just asking as I got it coming up in a couple weeks and can get kitted out for then ;)

Still need to know what Paul means about an applicator on the pole.

I cleaned Gutterings and Facias last week. I use a vikan brush to clean most of the facias etc.

For the job between the guttering and facia board I allways switch poles as the design of the vikan brush head is to wide to get under the gutter.

I use a normal Gaza brush/Salmon brush. They have a long but narrow brush head which makes it ideal to get between the guttering and facia, I just adjust the goosehead and get to work. It does a really good job.

John in answer to you, yes I can it comes out in a jet rather than a fan, works well for me, but you must unsrew the nozzle so its just on to acheive the right stream and pump up the container to full pressure.

We do it for some jobs we do.
Mix up you TFR solution in a bucket, Dip applicator in stick on an unger pole ( Or similar) wet the whole area you are to clean with your wetted applicator.
Leave for 5 - 10 minutes and WFP off.

Comes up well.
