Vac Motor bearings
« on: September 17, 2006, 07:16:15 am »
Hi,

I was wondering if any of you knew a way to grease/oil the bearings inside a vac motor (prochem) as ours has started to give off a slight ringing noise when it gets hot.

I think its the first motor after the recovery tank and the bearings have dried out after taking foam through the motor.

Having not looked at the the base of the motor, i would presume you can access the bearings, but im not sure what type of grease/oil to use.

Any help or advice would be much appreciated.

Hi graham
I would change the bearings if I were you, once they start making any strange noises they are on the way out, I used to change the brushes at the same time, and also clean the commutator on the armeture(the part the brushes contact the armature)as carbon builds up between the contacts and will eventually short out. :(
                          all the best

I would agree with John, that ultimately it'd be wise to overhaul the motor. The last thing you want is it breaking down half way through an important job.

However, you can buy aerosol spray grease which will probably cure the problem for the next few weeks, until you can get the machine on the bench for repair. Just be careful not to spray the commutator or brushes as it could cause poor contact.

Maplin sell aerosol grease if you can't find it elsewhere.

Forget changing the bearings or brushes, these parts need to be changed before they go. Buy a new vacuum they only cost £110 for a 3-stage

On your ebay auctions what do you do if you do not get £110 for a motor.

Woodbridge do 3 stage motors at low prices
