Whilst doing the washing up earlier. (I know, I know, but the missus was meeting a mate for dinner tonight) i got thinking to myself, I'm cleaning these dishes with the same formula that a lot of window cleaners use trad. Just a bit of fairy and water. So then i thought to myself if i had a bowl of pure water would it do the same quality job on the dishes as the fairy did or after one greasy pan would the water be spent.

I'm assuming that it probably wouldn't even clean one dish properly because of the amounts of water needed to clean a pane of glass.

I think you would still need detergent to clean your dishes with otherwise they are going to smell.
The water may make them look clean but will not remove the odour.

Oh heck yes, you would need detergent!!
You would need less of it because pure water is softer than the softest of tap water of course; ergo you will produce far more suds.
If you live in a really hard water area you always need far more soap or shampoo or washing up liquid to do whatever job is required than you do if you live in a soft water area.
the hardness of the water makes a big difference.

Pure water will not dissolve grease, for that you need detergent of some kind.

And Roger you muppet, all restaurants will use dishwashers (and not the manual dishwashers, ie, human staff!).
This way way they are rinsed and dried without the need for a tea towel, which is highly unhygienic
You're quite right about odour and smell though.

Maybe you should try having a bath in pure water with no soap and see how ya get on 

I think with your dishes its a case of all types of grease, fats, sauces etc.. on your plate which is far tougher and more stubborn to remove. You would definately need soap.

Not only all the below, but pure water wants to return to its impure state, so the first dirty dish and it becomes normal water again??
 
I don't know Lance, I remember the first time my mrs told me to do the dishes, so I went out and bought her a dish washer I still didn't do them she put them all in her new dish washer.

the trouble would be that as soon as you started to take the dirt off the plate, the water its in wouldn't be clean anymore, so you would need to do it with a showerhead type setup.

the problem is tho, that as much as it probably would get them clean, and indeed leave them sparklling, pure water is NOT antibacterial (if you have ever left a tank full open to the air for a long time, you will see that RO'd water is actually quite the oposite - green scum ahoy)
