New carpet odour
« on: July 03, 2006, 10:20:08 pm »
Customer had a new carpet fitted 12 weeks ago, it arrived and was fitted being the wrong colour to that was ordered.

Not a problem, the company fitted the correct one 2 weeks later. a light beigh patern but the same style...... not sure of the previouse colour, 100% quality wool.

She suffers from Rhinitis. Ten weeks on she suffers from irritation to the air passage as soon as she walks into the room and cannot stay in the room.

The original carpet that was fitted was not a problem to her but the new one is causing an alergic reaction.

I must say that the odour from this carpet is very strong, even 10 weeks on.
I suppose you could describe it as the new smell which most carpets have, but wear off after a few months.

Customer asked me to clean it and apply a protector, which I did last week, in the hope she could soon live in the room.

Has any body got an idea what is causig the odour?
Could it be the bonding or is it the wool which is causing the alergic reaction?

Before answering we need to know the following;

What is the pile content?
Is it a hessian back, felt back or other?
Is it a tufted or wilton?
What is it fitted on?
Does she have a leaky radiator possible causing water to rot backing?
Are there any other underlying causes for the smell in the room other than the carpet?

Most new carpets, the smell goes within weeks not months. With a wool carpet for the first couple of weeks alot of 'fluff' is released.

Without wanting to speculate, it is probably the wool that is causing this smell.

Hi

I have always wondered if people were allergic to latex, would a tufted carpet bonded with white latex set set off thier allergy?

Just a thought

I too suffer from Chronic Rhinitis, I also fit carpets as well as clean them. Some years ago I used to regularly fit for a large store. The latex adhesive of the carpet backing had me developing Flu like symptoms by the afternoon every day I carried out fitting. To be so affected, as the lady is, she must have it really bad, could be the adhesive, gassing off, or airborne particles. I take she has well ventilated the room since the carpet was fitted, if not it could be an accumulation of the adhesive fumes.
