Trailer what is best ?
« on: May 02, 2017, 06:03:27 am »
Looking at selling va n and getting a 800 berlingo or similar.
Want the trailor for the pressure washing system with 500 - 800 litre tank.
What specs should I be looking out for E.G. TOWING AND LOAd weight?
Any advice truly appreciated.
Thanks.

I bought a "Noval Portaflot" trailer secondhand. (Think "Erde" like the Halford's ones - but at the top end size wise) It was about £120 quid I think with a canvas cover.

In old money it is about 5ft x 3ft and has a payload of just over 410kg and a total weight limit of 499kg so just under the weight limit where it needs its own braking system.

Changed the bearings which are about £25 a set, bought a spare wheel and put a 250L tank in it, built up the sides with ply, put an immerson in the tank, a reel sat alongside but could sit on the top when parked.

Dropped the battery (70ah) in at the start of the day, switched on the shurflo pump and ready for action.

NOTE: This was an add on to my Doblo system when Dan the Man started. The Doblo with 400L and the trailer with 250 gave us enough for the day. 6 months later when work had built up I got a bigger van and the trailer had its tank removed and became an all purpose vehicle which I use for carrying a generator and guttervac - or more accurately Dan does.
It's a game of three halves!

Me again ...

Anything more than a 250L tank and I reckon you need a beefier trailer with brakes and payload to match. If you buy second hand I would change the bearings straight away.

.... and the add to Granville posts; that the train weight or gross combination weight of the van is legally able to tow that weight.

750kg is the maximum trailer weight and load weight you are able to use without brakes on the trailer. Anything above that needs a braked trailer. If your trailer has brakes fitted they have to work properly.

Also beware that some van insurance companies dont include towing. I found this out this year when I was comparing quotes.   Towbars are classed as a vehicle modification.

I wouldn't dream of having a trailer instead of a van, Tony. I would only have a trailer if ...

A) I was so boracic that I had to add it to the family car.

Err ... that's it really.
