Self Baffle
« on: March 07, 2017, 10:54:26 am »
Could anyone give me any advise on Baffling an ibc tank?
My brother has just bought a business that comes with a van and a 650 litre ibc tank in the back. I am not comfortable about him using it but he will have to for a couple of months until he can afford to buy a baffled tank.
Many thanks.

Play pit balls and puncture holes in them. They will be the cheaper option. I have a 500 wydale tank upright which is kinda split into two 250l sections. I use 200 balls but could put another 100 in.
So for that size tank you will need plenty.

Tell him to drive slowly and esp on bends

Thanks for that Soupy, i am doing some research now and have read about cable tying plant pots together?
It will be interesting to see if any other window cleaners have self baffled there tanks and what methods they have used.

Yes,thanks. I am concerned about the ullage when the tank is half full, especially on bends.
I also do not like the fact it is an ibc tank but i do know other window cleaners use them in there van, i will have to check out the insurance cover for it.

Before I changed vehicles and to a bespoke sectionally baffled tank, I bought 25 meters of this and cut it up and shoved it all in a 650 upright wyedale tank.

You can't properly it needs to have divided sections in the tank holding the water in the sections so there's no sloshing movement possible, fill it
full of as many balls as you like it won't stop all that water going where gravity wants to take it. If you cut the the top off your tank if it's baffled it'll look as if your looking down onto a rubix cube.

I was just answering your original question how can i baffle my IBC tank,in short you can't it's not meant to be used for window cleaning it's meant for static fluid storage I do a contract they've got dozens of them where they store chemicals that are turned into polish. Get one with welded seams that's properly baffled you won't know it's in the back of the vehicle when full.

But reading the original post, he mentioned 2 other things. 1st its his brothers and 2nd he knows its not ideal and will soon be changing it when funds allow.
We all know ibc tanks are not for this purpose and hence the question of how to get by as safe as he can until the point where funds have been raised.

Hi. I've recently baffled my 500layflat that was bad for sloshing. I've used plant pots as already mentioned. I brought a few hundred off eBay for £20 and cable tied the bottoms together. That way they take up the most space without slotting into each other.

It's worked perfectly. When I stop and get out the van the water isn't moving at all in the tank. At crusing speed the water doesn't slosh either.

recommend this method completely.

Some of the very first ionic systems used to come with 640  or 1000 Litres IBC as standard within there stainless steel frames

To baffle them they would get down pipes and cut them to length to fit standing upright and out loads in until it's full
and the make the end that sits on bottom of the tank a 45 degree angles cut

They seemed to work okay In there frames

Whether I'd want one in van without a metal frame is another question but many do

I have a 650 ibc in van with metal frame, i bought a load of drainage pie and threw that in the tank.

Made a big difference, dont even notice any movement now.

Not saying its safe!! I know its less than ideal but its worked for me.

Having said that im looking for another tank with frame to have bolted down proper like.

Iv got a 600ltr IBC in a metal cage. Had it about 2 yrs with 25mtrs irrigation hose. Never had a problem. Even when half full ,Drive sensible and you'll be fine.

Not all baffled tanks that are purpose made for the job are great, there are plenty of posts that testify to that.

I idea of a baffled tank is to break-up the water into manageable compartments. I best I have found is fill up the tank with clean soft drink bottles. +Cut the bottoms off so that the water can flow through them. Milk bottle can also do the job, just remember to cut off the bottoms.
