« on: May 31, 2006, 10:09:45 pm »
Does any chemist/cc know how Iwould get a pink stain caused from morphine based medicine called ORAMORPH out of a light coloured 80/20.It`l have to be all or nothing as even 90%removel will still be unsightlly.I`m going to see it thursday pm but I feel it`s probably a writeoff.Problem is it`s a massive apt and she wants a quote to clean everything,so it would help if Icould do something with the stain.
HOPEFULLY!
RICE.

Hi,

I have done a bit of reading into oramorph and its a sulfate salt of morphine [1].  The DEA shows it a white tablet [2] so maybe the colouration is a dye they use in the tablet for the UK market, or more likely its a degradation product. The structure of morphine is shown here [3]

Its used in oral dosing so it will be stable to acid, and should be soluble in water under acidic conditions, so you could try to remove it with an acidic rinse agent or distilled vinegar.

In alkali it will probably only be soluble in solvents, acetone (nail varnish remover) was allways my favourite as a chemist as its easy to boil off the excess.  Methanol, or isopropyl alcohol would probably work well also (methylated spirits or screenwash) and be a bit more controllable that acetone as they boil  at a much higher temp. I would be careful if the carpet is tufted, as you might begin to dissolve the resin holding the backing layers together.

I just wonder why its pink and that worries me as it might not be the drug iteself, more likely a filler in the tablet or a degradation product.  As far as i can see, the fillers are pretty benign. Lactose, Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose, Colloidal Silicon Dioxide, and Stearic Acid are the fillers.

I know that another member had trouble with a coloured drug product and ended up retufing, maybe he will have some ideas for you.  .Anyways, I will have a think about it today and post again tonight if i have any more thoughts.

Hope this helps
