Is there a better way of connecting wires together? I normally use bullet connectors but don't think they are that good (might be that quality varies).

If it's going to permanent then solder and wrap with heat shrink.

Yep that's probably the best way.
To be fair the connector blocks I use have been fine, just not very neat looking.

Bullets are what most people use ,the only way you'll get a better connection is to solder everything,guy I knew had nothing but trouble until he soldered all connections

i remember getting some plastic ones , male/ female which were a lot easier to pull apart,  mine come out of my bullet ones often,   maybe because i just tighten up with pliers   because i have no crimper pliers.  to connect securelly.
ive seen some crimping pliers  on ebay   for as little as £190 + free postage.
wilkinsons £4.90  with some bullet crimps.
ive just connected mine up to those double connectors .     wilkinsons around £1 for around 10

just snap or cut off what you need,     screw in or out if needed,   secure.
thats what i did this morning,     the wire from pump kept  coming out of bullet crimp.    fine now.

to disconnect these bullet crims you need to use pliers .
