water - business expense
« on: March 16, 2015, 09:12:28 pm »
I have just moved house and my new house has a water meter, nothing I can do about that.
I have done some research and read I could claim some of the expense back off my tax bill.
Question is,what do I need as proof to claim some money back?
United utilities will NOT fit a sub meter before anyone suggests that
Thanks

Just keep a record of the litres you are using, and at the end of the year multiply the amount used by the cost of the water.

THEY won't fit a sub meter.
But YOU can.

I've just had my bill last week.
Just waiting on the recalculated bill now.

where do I put the sub meter, before the r.o? Do I need to take photos or  just take the readings of the total water bill?
Also any links to submeters would be greatly appreciated

Here you go:

I have my pure water go to my tank, obvs. And the waste water goes on my lawn. So I have all my work water rebated.
If your waste goes down the drain, they'll charge for that.
So it depends how you're set up-where the meter will go.
Take photo's of it when it's new (to show its at zero) then I'd say monthly or so.
I've been doing it for the last 4 years now and when I rang this week they didn't even want to see the photo's because I'd built up a case (kind of...if you know what I mean) they just took the reading I gave them over the phone and recalculated.
I've kept the photo's though, just in case.
I've got a folder in iPhoto with pics of the meter at various intervals.

I have just had the conversation ith united utilities and they have stated that if I want to claim any sort of rebate for using the water for my window cleaning business them thy will quite happily switch me to a commercial tariff andtht will ost much more... No option!!!!  So how are you guys getting it past them as water used for commercial purposes but on a domestic tariff?

Cheers

Ask them what the threshold for forced commercial tariff is?
Id be surprised if you HAVE to go on a commercial tariff for, in the grand scheme of things, very low use.

Unfortunately, each local water authority seems to operate differently.
Im with Anglian who have been spot on. (not that that helps you, sorry.)

You need to be firm with them.  If they wish to charge you for water returned to sewer that you can prove (with your meter) is not being returned to sewer, tell them you will bill them every year for the amount you can prove has not gone to sewer and, if necessary, you will pursue them to court for that amount.

If they refuse to deal with you adequately refer them to the CCW, Consumer Council for Water.  Make life difficult for them.

Cant remember the litres but I pay £140PCM (work and home use) and they ask for £1k at the end of each year which then gets knocked off when i give them my sub-meter reading.

Vin makes good points, as usual.
But the problem is that if you are less than 100% confident in threatening CCW, they will possibly call your bluff.
It's tough.

Cheers for the help lads. I am also with united utilities so hoping there is something I can do to get a rebate. If not its not the end of the world when you consider how much money you can earn from it

I didn't say threaten them with CCW.  When you're happy that you can show the CCW that you've tried to address the matter and that UU aren't resolving the issue, just refer it to the CCW.

I only meant that UU will think of it as a threat.
But, yeah, point taken.
