Is there a problem with leaving the hot water heater and the gas turned off and just having the cold water running through it all the time?

I did that for a few months, didn't seem to cause any trouble...but now I generally don't heat the water (it hasn't ever frozen in the hoses..yet). Our Newcastle arm uses an immersion heater for a few hours and the water stays at a nice temperature all day, no gas (just plenty of KWs!!)

No mate.
I had mine connected up for about 3 years and only really used the heater in winter

 Nick if you do that I'd remove batteries for the ignition or just turn one round the other way that will
Stop it clicking trying to ignite the pilot light

Or just turn it off

Yeah, Danny, as poleking pointed out, there is an electrical on/off switch on the heater; thanks for the suggestion though.
