That's about it in a nutshell, I prefer this 'soft' sell approach, if it's a no I offer a leaflet and move on.

I can vary the lines a little out of boredom ie..  "We clean your neighbours in the street, Would you like a regular window cleaning service"

This the standard sort of line.
"Good evening, were local window cleaners, would you be interested in a cleaning service"

Dress smart but casual, don't crowd the doorway and be confident, not only delivering your line, but explaining ( if the potential customer is interested) your quality, your frequencies etc. keep it short and simple.

This is the way I do it.  I carry leaflets, good quality and professionally design. The quality of the leaflet gives the image of a quality of your company.
I knock door, when answered smile and ask if they have a window cleaner. if they answer yes I tell them I won`t bother them any further and sorry to  trouble them.
The ones who don`t want to know soon let you know. The one`s who are interested give them a leaflet and sell your service. Ask if they would like a clean today or book later in the month.
If you come across the NO COLD CALLERS then put a leaflet through. For the ones that say no junk mail put one through anyway as if they are looking for your services they`ll call.
There are ways to hard sell and tricks to get people to say yes but trust me you won`t keep them.
Good luck and knock every day, evenings are best.

Disagree slightly with this, just because they have a window cleaner doesn't mean they are happy with that window cleaner.
If they say yes hand them the leaflet and say sorry for taking up your time here's a leaflet explaining the service I offer if
things change in the future please feel free to give me a call.
Remember some people don't like to be put on the spot and will use the I have a window cleaner as an excuse to get rid of you
but after a reading your leaflet might decide to give you a shot.

I will put door knocking it a nut shell. People have and false image of a window cleaner. When you knock it give them an opportunity to suss you out. If you look presentable and honest and you won`t run off with there belonging you will stand a good chance. Your way of talking to then and a little charm will be a plus.

That's a good result 10 customers generating from delivering a letter,my approach is knock first ,if out leave leaflet, then call back, this saves time and shoe leather,as once you have spoken to them there either a new customer or crossed off list.

Using a different approach to leafleting and getting good results!
Now where have I heard that before.
Good on you matey.
Many on here like door knocking others like leaflets. Both work equally as well as each other IF done correctly.
Looks like you are on the right track.
Keep it up.

Agree with this. I would venture to guess that many who don't knock doors fear the same response as they would give themselves. I have always knocked doors, and very, very few have been abusive. If spoken to politely most people, even if not interested, are ok.
