Accident and injury insurance?
« on: January 04, 2015, 11:46:22 am »
Does anyone have this? Always thought about it...but never looked into it.

I know its pretty low risk on windows with pole system now, but you never know. Also in Fire Service so chances are i could get hurt. Need to think about the what ifs.

I once looked into it but it's some time ago now. The top & bottom of it was that you paid a hefty premium for little in return.  The criteria to even get that little return was quite complex & not easy to get should you need it.

I came to the conclusion that putting your own money to the side each week/month was a better value prospect.

I don't know if things have changed or not now.

Most are a rip off when it comes to a claim. I had one years ago and was pants. Mt friend is a joiner and burned himself badly. He had to have accounts and all sorts of stuff done. He is still with the company but has a set income if he is off work

Yes this was what i assumed. Just seeing if anyone here had used one. We all know insurance companies will riggle out in any way possible.

Maybe theyre not worth it.

If you get one with a reasonable premium then look at the terms and conditions you will see that they are written in such a way that it is highly unlikely that it will ever pay out. For ones with reasonable terms and conditions the price is ridiculous.  Personally I think it is best to have a regular transfer into a savings account to cover this type of thing.
Being in the fire service is probably a lower risk than window cleaning ( I know insurance companies see it this way) as you will be working in higher risk environments but you will also be working under more controlled procedures than window cleaning ( risk cards SOPS etc).
And if you did get injured sick pay for retained can work out better than their usual pay.

Love this bit, are they not responsible for your safety/wellbeing. I know your only a volunteer but is it all at your own risk?
Insurance companies are generally quick to take your money and reluctant to pay out. Give them info like pt fireman or ride motorbikes and the list of exclusions may make the policy worthless.
You may be better off saving £50 a month into your own sickness fund.

The problem with these policies is they will only pay out an average of around 75% of your taxable income, so in the event of a claim if for example you have bought a lot of equipment or perhaps a new van in the previous financial year which will help to keep your profits down, this will more or less wipe out any payout.

i have an emergency fund which covers me for unexpected emergencies, van breakdown/bad weather  etc but i plan to put more into it over the next few years so ive got £10,000-£15,000 behind me at any one time in case i have to have a few months off or buy another van/system etc.
price higher/work harder!
