saddle tank
« on: August 10, 2014, 12:44:11 am »
Hi does anyone have one? Is the handling terrible with one.

I am looking at possibly a 250litre one in my expert van or would this be a mistake. I understand the carpet cleaners may use them.

Any thoughts please.

Regards

I have no experience of using one, but i there is no way i would. One of the fundamental rules of putting a heavy load in a van, or whatever, is that you keep the weight as low as possible for stability. The expert is not a particularly small van, so i am curious as to why you feel you need one in the 1st place?. I have a flat 500l tank (L 1000mm, W 920mm, H 620mm) in my connect lwb, there is a plastic fish box on top of the tank for all my bits and pieces, poles are on the sides or hanging from the roof, reel is behind the tank, and i have no space issues. I would always recommend a flat tank over an upright one, but if you really felt you needed more space, a normal upright tank would be a better idea than a saddle tank. An upright (baffled) 250l tank  is only 325mm wide (1100mm long, 865mm tall), if you had that across the front of your load bay, it would leave plenty of space behind it. Btw, 250l is way too small for me, so i am assuming you are trad, and use wfp for certain jobs?.

In the interest of safe handling would it not be best to have a pair ?

Thanks for the comments. Very constructive.

I saw one of these tanks and thought they were a good idea but from what you all say having one would not be recommended especially under cornering.

They would be useful I suppose if you wanted to keep the full load length of a van. So I would probably go for the flat tank.

I currently use barrels but at the moment are struggling with them but although I am mainly WFP I rarely use 200l per day so probably 300l will do me for a little bit extra.

Thanks once again..

One of the local cleaners has 1 saddle tank in his Vivaro van. He also also a carpet cleaner so the carpet cleaning machines would probably counteract the weight over the one wheel. The van sits 'level' with the tank full and he doesn't have an issue with it. The design of it doesn't seem very safe, so he had a fabricator make a steel mounting frame for his tank.

I don't think the water sloshes about much.
