Van problem
« on: July 30, 2014, 04:58:57 pm »
My last set of tyres scrubbed off right on the edges on the left hand side of my van (the right side are fine)
So i bought 2 new tyres and asked for the tracking to be done... He said the tracking is bang on mate, but there clearly was a problem otherwise the tyres wouldnt scrub off.

The tyre wear started after i had a ball joint and track rod ends done on the van and ever since the steering has been slightly out and it pulls to the left.

I know it sounds obvious but are your tyre pressures ok, bearing in mind the weight your carrying?
You can't polish a turd

Yeh all the same the garage did them when replacing new tyres.
Plus i never had a problem with tyres wearing on the edge until i had work done on the ball joint and track rod ends

get a 4 wheel alignment done.  Was it lower suspension arm( lower ball joint) and track rod end? Its possible but rare that they fitted wrong lower ball joint and wheel isn't vertical as it where. Track rod end wouldn't make any difference, as its wound in or out so wheel is facing correct direction

if the tires are uni-directional, make sure that the tires are fitted the right way round

What kind of garages have the ability to do these tests? Im guessing the bigger more upmarket ones.
And your theory sounds like it could be right, as it does seen strange that it was straight after i had the work done on ball joint.

check this quickly at home, jack the van up and check for play in the wheels from back to front and then up and down, just checking if the track rod ends and bearings are giving any play, with wheel bearings you can get faulty ones (especially if they were cheep ones used) also look at the rubber cv boot) if you can only do this while the van is jacked up put an axle stand under first if you can see grease escaping from the boot, that need replacing.

wheel bearing could cause play from the top to the bottom, normally they humm while driving but not always

tracking should always be done after this type of repair
