Newbie friend wants to try one out - I don't know anything about them other than they seem expensive and some have said they don't work very well?

Who's using one and getting good results? Don't Unger make one too?

Dave its very hard to get a smear free finish with any of the pad systems.
Especially if there is the smallest bit of condensation in the room.
Don't go for a Dragonfly as they are totally overpriced.
I have tried them and to be honest I find it easier and a lot less work to use a mop and squeegee on a pole.
I only use the Dragonfly now to detail the windows after squeegeeing them dry.
In my honest opinion there are a lot more cons than pros with these systems.

We use the unger system as its about the best of the lot.. We have to use it because of many restrictions placed upon as on a job.. None of them are ever going to be as good as up close and personal.. But we spray a little of a decent glass cleaner on the pad and it helps a lot.. Glass cleaner is alcohol based so evaporates fairly well..

I would agree with seanK it is very hard to get a smear free finish using microfiber mop pads, we spent years sourcing microfiber that would leave a smear free finish eventually we found little waffle glass cloths which have been designed specifically to clean glass just using water, use one damp and proceed to clean surface then use a second one dry to polish off for a smear free finish.

I borrowed a Vikan Easy Shine thing for a one off job.

What a complete waste of time and what an utterly useless and expensive bit of equipment. The glass looked better before using that pile of junk when it was dirty all over.

The windie who lent it to me said that it wouldn't work as promised and he was right.

you need to put velcro on the cloths too otherwise it doesn't stick, so not very useful on a pole.

Not familiar with the concept of Velcro are you Benjamin.
Although it won't stick fast, it will stay put.

did you try the waffle cloths from Tadgh on a vikan easy shine head?

I hate to admit it but the more I use those waffle cloths, the more I like them.

For wholesale trad work on houses, dunno, as I use wfp, but for the shops I do which have a lot of internal glass, brilliant.

Hi Guys, just to clarify you can use little waffle cloths with either the Vikan,Dragonfly,or Unger systems, for cleaning internals by hand you just use one damp with water to clean the glass then use a second one dry to polish off for a smear free finish, if you are cleaning internals at height just use a standard telescopic mop  which will extend from 100cm to 180cm, or a ( 2x1mtr ext pole,2x2mtr ext pole, 3x2mtr ext pole, or 5x2mtr ext pole.) if you are using an ext pole just take off the plastic end piece and stick on an aluminum flat mop frame the ones which have two velcro strips which will grip the little waffle glass cloths and allow you to clean at your required height.  If anyone is interested in pricing just send me an email and i will send on more information.   Regards Tadgh

I've got the Vikan easy shine.
It's not suitable for dirty exterior glass in my opinion and isn't intended for that purpose.
I purchased it with the intention of cleaning awkward to reach interior glass on rare occasions when a squeegee on a pole or from ladders is impractical.
In my experience it does a 90% job compared to a squeegee, but considering on interior glass you are mainly cleaning off bug poo and greasy finger marks rather than outside dirt it's not having to work too hard.
I sparingly wet a 14" mop on a pole and scrub the window first, I've found that I prefer using a traditional mop to clean the window as it has more texture and makes it easier to remove muck.
This leaves the glass damp but not dripping with water.
Then I put the Easy Shine mop head on and dry off the glass usually with an up/down motion.
I don't regret buying it as it does serve a purpose, I wouldn't use it all the time for all interior glass, but on the rare occasion I do need to use it I find it a worthwhile tool.

I didn't buy the "kit".
I just bought the vikan mop head and a few of the replacement microfibre mop cloths.

And use an old cut down fibreglass wfp pole.
