Stuck pre filter housings
« on: June 26, 2014, 06:07:52 pm »
Anyone experienced this?  I've taken the (jumbo 10" like this one http://www.vyair.com/scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=181) housings off the system and out of the van, drained the water, used the plastic black spanner on it but neither will budge.  I've even tried banging the spanner handle with a rubber mallet but still nothing.  Yes, I am turning to the left!

I need to change the sediment and carbon pre filters and can't remove the housings on either - any advice?  I must be doing something wrong.  If I can get them open and replaced they won't be tightened as much this time.

There should be a red button on top of the housing press it in this will allow the pressure
to drop and make it easier to unscrew.

Thanks Sean, I should've put I've already done this, a lot!  Unless the red button needs to be pushed hard and all the way down, in which case I haven't done that yet!  I can easily push it halfway, does it need more than that?

There should be any pressure in there now anyway as I've removed the pipes from it

It turns out I had to beat the crap out of them with the mallet and they've both come off now!  Neither old filter looks like my new ones so which goes first, sediment or carbon?

Sediment goes first it protects the carbon which would get blocked by sediment
very quickly.

OK ta.  Now, should I be flushing these prefilters prior to putting to fitting them back into the system e.g. don't let the water run from them and into the RO?  To protect the RO maybe?

If so, how to flush? !!!

If this isn't necessary and I can just hook it all up then fine, I can disconnect the RO from the DI and wait for the TDS to drop before creating pure ready for work tomorrow :)

I got an old section of an aluminium pole and hit it with a hammer to slightly flatten it out so it would fit over the handle of my filter housing spanner.  The extra leverage makes it easy to remove the filter housing.

Once when I'd over-tightened it I broke the handles of two of those plastic spanners trying to get it off, so be careful you don't over-tighten them when you put them back on.

In this instance I had to use an oil filter spanner, with the aluminium extension, to remove it.
